How the Legal and Historical Tools Helps Prove the Reliability of the Bible

Christianity is fully dependent upon the historical aspects of the Bible. Without it the faith would be in jeopardy. Critics know this and thus try all in their power to destroy its reliability. For centuries, opponents of the Bible have sought to discredit the historical accounts documented therein. If the historical accounts never took place, the Bible becomes nothing more than the pages that it is written upon. Good for us that God decided to give us an accurate record of not only the past, but of things yet to come.Even given the many evidences of the infallibility of the Bible, the opponents have become even more desperate in their attempts to prove inaccuracy or inconsistency with Biblical doctrine. For this reason the tools of legal and historical apologetics was developed and they are applied in the following ways:

Understanding Biblical History and Chronology. This helps us to understand the history and chronology of different cultures as they may vary from culture to culture.

Understanding the different Cultures and Customs. The cultures and customs of peoples in biblical times are certainly different to those of today. This would include speech and behavior. Gaining insight about those behavioral practices will help us to understand them better.

Understanding Biblical Languages and Meanings. A lot of people are confused by word usage and certain terms used in the bible. It must be understood that those terms and words are not used in the same context as they are today. Getting to understand why and how they were used in ancient times will help us to understand what they meant then, and how it applies to us now.

Reconstructing Biblical Events. A reconstruction of events can give better insights into how or even why that particular event occurred, for example, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This gives more meaning to the event and may even help us to change the way we live now.

Understanding The Present Text. The bible is thousands of years old and has been accurately preserved for us today. This in itself has a wonderful and interesting history. Just the fact that the bible has existed for so long is testimony to its Divinity. All the ancient manuscripts that have been found also helped to verify its accuracy. Another way the historical tools have helped is to verify the fact that the Apocrypha is not part of the original bible text.

Understanding Prophecy. Approximately one-third of the bible is made up of prophecy and some of it has already been fulfilled. Historical Investigations helps us to better appreciate how these prophetic events occurred and how they relate to future events.
