The Secret of Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens is one of the best known authors of the 19th Century and probably one of the best all time story tellers. His imagination has given birth to classics such as A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and many more. The amazing thing about the stories of Dickens is the messages with in them are as relevant today as they were when they were written. I believe this gives them that classic and everlasting appeal to young and old alike. When you look at the events that shaped Dickens life you can see some similarities in the stories he tells. Like for example when Dickens was 12 his father was put into debtor prison for failing to pay his bills: Dickens was forced to work in a warehouse somewhat reminiscent of the workhouse that Oliver twist was forced to work in. And in another similarity later in the story his father received an inheritance that was enough to pay his bills and give Dickens and his family a comfortable life. It also allowed Dickens to finis
h his education so that he could produce the stories that one day the world would enjoy.Sadly Dickens died suddenly at the young age of 58 of a stoke, on 9th June 1870, perhaps robbing us of even more classics which sadly we will never read. At the time of his death Dickens had a amassed a personal fortune that would have been valued today at about $6.5 Million.I'm sure everyone has a favourite Dickens story I do: A Christmas Carol, it teaches two of life's most important lessons: that family and friends are more important than money and possessions and to treat people as you wish to be treated yourself. One might say that this is a Christmas spirit which is important all year not just for one day!I realise this may not be all that insightful but that's the beauty of Dickens' stories, the moral is clear and pure and reminds us of simpler times.
