Time Enough For Love may technically be one long novel, but in fact it's a group of short stories that revolve around the life of a character named Lazarus Long. Long is the oldest living human being. The story opens with Long on his death bed, dying of old age. He's lost interest in life, after centuries of living and doing and achieving, and eventual boredom. He's lived so long, in fact, that a good portion of the human race is related to him on some distant level, and some of his more recent great-great grandchildren take an interest in finding a reason for him to go on living and take an interest in life again. This journey of discovery is interesting on several levels. Mixed in between encounters in this storyline are short stories involving Long's past. Like when he lived as a planetary pioneer, or when he freed former slaves and taught them to run their own business. In the end, Long goes back in time to discover his beginnings at the turn of the 20th century, and meets
his progenitors. Some may be put off by the loose (to put it mildly) sexual morality that exists in this novel, but this reviewer found the concept more amusing than distasteful. What does a guy do when every gal in town is the great great great granddaughter of someone he used to take out on Saturday nights?Overall, a solid read by an author who has captured the imaginations of many over the years, and continues to entertain even though his stories are now decades old. I also recommend other stories by this author, particularly Stranger in a Strange Land, one of his greatest works in this reviewer's opinion.
