This book should be called the awesome manual for how to live your life. That being said, 4 Hour Workweek sounds cleaner and catchier. The book is a guide to doing what you want with your life. I will tell you upfront that I do not agree with everything the Timothy Ferris says nearly, and I'm sure as you read through it you will not either. That being said, the information contained in here is so amazing that to have it all in one place makes this one of the best books of our generation. The 4 Hour Workweek was first written in 2007. The book is a study in lifestyle design. The idea is that people need to live their life now, rather than the deferred lifestyle of working 40 hours per week for 40 years that our parents, grandparents and those who came before us lived. Life was not created, so we could be tied to a desk for 40 years during the most productive years of our life. We can be out there exploring the world and enjoying our passions. What the 4 Hour Workweek does is tak
e you through a four step plan called DEAL or DELA for those who are currently employed. It stands for define, eliminate, automate, and liberate.Define: What you want for your life? Do I want to live in a tropical island or maybe travel the world? Maybe you can just sit there and paint or watch your kids grow up? The idea is that you give define your life. Stop with the excuses and create a dream line, where you want to be and how to get there. Retirement is a worst-case scenario in the book.Elimination: Now that you know what you want the keys to determine a path of action. What is discussed in the following are powerful philosophies based on Pareto principle and Parkinson's Law. Together they form the basis of eliminating the unnecessary to create a world of possibilities. Pareto's principle states that 20% of your actions will result in 80% of your outputs. That means you can eliminate 80% of the things that you do on a daily basis. Parkinson's Law states that the more ti
me that you have for a project, the worse you will do on that project. The idea is that you will do better on a project that you had one day versus one week, because the one day focuses your mind to complete the project effectively.Automation: Once you have eliminated the unnecessary, you can begin to focus on automating some of the work to others. The Four Hour Workweek is all about creating systems. So those who work for you can get things done them more efficiently and effectively without you being there. You are the ghost in the machine that monitors all the work is done correctly, and step in to make changes when necessary. In order to do this you need to create systems for everything. The systems that you create will allow others to do what you have previously done and automate the work with you not being there.Liberation: The final step in the process is liberation. This is where the processes and systems are in place and you are not needed as much on a day-to-day on
a daily basis. For those who work for companies, a plan is needed to ease yourself away from the office. For those who are self-employed, the steps above will be that much easier. Do a trial run, to test out your new found freedom and then when that has worked go forward with your plans full blown. You now have the potential to work four hours a week after reading this book. You do not have to take all of the steps above, just the ones that are right for you. This book for many can be a helper and a friend to build a life that you always knew you could have.
