Book Review for "The Bloodstained Bistro"Minx Tobin Mysteries, Book 1Written by: Susanne Marie KnightDesert Breeze PublishingISBN: 978-1-936000-57-1Ebook Format4 Stars"The Bloodstained Bistro" is a witty beginning to the Minx Tobin Mystery Series. Knight pens an appealing cast of characters to compliment her eyebrow raising whodunit.Minx Tobin has recently moved to Los Angeles from New York and has found a job as a fitness instructor for the Elite Exercise Emporium. She has a very methodical mind and as her boss, Sadie, points out, Minx should be a private investigator.Minx notices that a client, Brandi Evans, is upset and offers her an ear. They go to Valentin's Bistro to chat. Brandi tells Minx her ex-boyfriend, Neal Loehman, is stalking her. Minx gives Brandi her phone number.A couple hours later, Brandi calls Minx asking for help. Neal ran Brandi's car off the road and into a ditch. Minx goes to pick Brandi up and takes the young woman to her apartment. An hour or two goe
s by before LAPD lieutenant, Gabe Harris, knocks on Minx's door. Gabe reveals that Neal's dead boy was found in the trunk of Brandi's car.Gabe arrests Brandi. Minx is mildly distracted by the good looking officer, but absolutely dumbfounded that Brandi is the number one suspect. The next day, Minx is determined to get to the truth and puts herself "on the case." As Minx snoops around, she keeps meeting Detective Harris. Minx and Gabe are like oil and water, but underneath the surface, attraction bubbles between them. Can Minx and Gabe work together to solve a murder?Knight's story is a delightful feast for the suspense's lovers soul. The writing is crisp, and the cast of characters are entertaining.Knight uses a good economy of words to paint Minx's Los Angeles without weighing down the storytelling. References to Echo Park, Santa Monica Boulevard, and other Los Angeles landmarks give the reader a feel for the setting.Knight has created a vibrant and dynamic cast of characte
rs. Each character has a distinct voice from Dallas Porter's drawl to Bistro owner, Valentin, with his Eastern European accent.Gabe Harris, the detective on the case embodies such traits as determination and heroism in the face of danger, yet Minx is not impressed with his loyalty or honesty when he blows off a date to talk to her.Minx is clever and fun loving, yet she is smarting over the hurt her ex-boyfriend caused when he cheated on her. It's this lingering pain which holds her back when it comes to Gabe. The novel is sweet for romance readers with Gabe and Minx sharing a tender touch. "The Bloodstained Bistro" takes the reader along for the ride with Minx in the driver's seat.
