My favourite thing is my first edition of Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. I am a voracious reader and my thesis was based on Woolf's childhood so that may help to partly explain my choice. However, the book has more significance as it was brought for me by my grandmother who sadly passed away last year. It was purchased on one of our last shopping trips together. Every January we used to travel down to London on the train for a shopping spree.Even though she would never normally buy anything it was always a happy excursion and enabled us to spend time together. The book was residing in an antique bookshop in Greenwich. It was actually my grandmother who suggested we went into the store. Mrs Dalloway was one of the first books I noticed.Just holding the book was an experience as you could feel the character and also the history of the book oozing out of its fragile pages. The book smelt very musty but it didn't matter to me. My grandmother noticed the twinkle in my eye and open
ed up her purse. I felt so proud leaving the shop with this book tucked under my arm.The good points of the book are the fact that it can evoke powerful memories for me. Both memories of my grandmother and also memories of meeting my partner at university as we both had attended a module on Virginia Woolf. I would swap all my home appliances for this book - it means that much.I can read this book again and again and still be impressed by Woolf's unique style of writing and use of images. The only things I would change about this book are the ancient brown coffee cup stains on the front cover which slightly affects its market value!
