Unions and Their Political Ideals Often at Odds With the Foundations of Capitalism

Running a civilization is not easy and there will always be self-interests that are put ahead of the over all interests of a society, whether it is the Ayn Rand affect, the greed is good factor or the reality that all politics are local. The AFL-CIO has an agenda, which is clear, protecting the rights of the workers, so they come first. First, as in before all other considerations, including customer, government, and/or company profits.Indeed, they make no bones about it, for it is their job, as they represent their workers. If you are not a member they do not represent you, as you are not to be considered, they come first and foremost by their very by-laws. Still, politically, they work to appeal to the masses and muster up a huge bit of political clout in doing so. Recently, I pulled an old book of my bookshelf to re-read, and so, let's discuss this for a moment shall we:"America Needs a Raise - Fighting for Economic Security and Social Justice" by John J. Sweeney, Presiden
t of the AFL-CIO - 1996. John touches on many aspects facing the American Worker in low and high-tech arenas including outsourcing, off-shoring, illegal immigration, legal immigrant labor, and economic issues like inflation and devaluation of the dollar. He discusses health care costs, benefits, robotics, as well as social injustice, high CEO pay and economic insecurity and what all this means to the American Worker's quality of life and standard of living. The book is well foot-noted and much of the information will not be new to you, but it is a very easy read for the average worker at an 8th grade reading level. Some of the information is jaded in nature, but if you consider the source, all issues and talking points of the Unions and disgruntled workers is in this book. They are things that we must all consider, so we see both sides, personally, I am appalled by the unions in our country, their underhanded tactics and dismissal of the very laws of free-enterprise that has bu
ild this great nation in the first place. So these issues concern me, and I believe all union workers must also look at the big picture and consider what is good for our nation, not just themselves, which is what the Unions claim the companies are doing as well.Is it fair to say that I am anti-union? Yes, that is fair to say, but I am not anti-American worker or anti-American Corporation. I am for all of it and a good balance, which I believe the free-market can handle without political influence, manipulation or taking an unfair advantage over another. Think on this, read the book, you decide.
