Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age

"Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age" by Bev Mahone is such a quick, funny and enjoyable read that I didn't realize I was finished!Being a "baby boomer" and less than 6 months younger than the author-I wanted to "read and compare" my life to another woman's who was in similar circumstances.I hopped on my exercycle and began reading. I was immediately taken in by the conversational tone and the honesty of all the various physical demises that Bev was going through-so much that I kept peddling until I was through with all 111 pages. Don't gasp-it was a mere 40 minutes. I felt myself slowing down during the last eight or nine pages. The peddling, not the reading.Done with a great deal of humor, I found myself laughing at parts I was going through: weight gain, menopause and hot flashes. Comparing her relationship with her teenage daughter to what I went through with my own very "independent thinker". Her professional highs and lows. Working for someone young enough
to be your child. Finding yourself being "shoved" into another career just as you needed the security the most. Recognizing that the "shove" was just a higher power's way of making you realize that you would be happier and better off doing what you loved rather than what was expected of you.The author also humorously told of her own mother's trip down menopausal lane. How she and her father handled all of the eccentricities and recognizing that she was doing many of the same behaviors. The best one was that her mother would open up all the windows during an Ohio snow storm complaining how hot she was! She went on to say that after a couple of tries, both she and her father learned to "deal" with the snow blowing in rather than incur the wrath that would be bestowed on them for even thinking about closing even one of the panes of glass! Her way of telling her readers how she is coping with all the challenges life has thrown at her is truly inspiring. While I can relate to mos
t of what was written, I was also happy to find that I wasn't a single parent or finding myself back into the dating game. However, if I had to be, I hope I would be as gracious and fortunate as Bev was-the last page of the book says it's for men only, but what it really is is a love letter to her new husband Nate.A nice thing that is included is a section that encourages women to ask questions of their mother's about what they went through during these particular years of their lives and to set up get-togethers with their friends to form support groups. She also encourages all those who would like to write up their own personal stories and send them to her-perhaps for a sequel?Hmmm, what a great idea! I'd better get started writing-maybe my story could be included.
