Working at home is no longer the stranger that it was years ago. Many individuals are choosing to avoid the commute for many reasons and, thanks to advanced technology, a work at home career is just a click away. A click of the computer mouse, that is. Many companies allow their staff to work at home because computers, telephones and fax machines allow the same efficiency as if the employee were actually at the office. In order for this technique to be a success, a home office must be prepared with the proper selection of home office furniture.
Before beginning to shop around, take the time to work out a budget and stick to it. Sit down and envision the way that you want the completed office to look. Make a list of each item that you think may be needed and a realistic cost of each. When you´re finished, total the amounts and see if the budget is within your spending means. If not, begin with only the essentials and work your way up to a complete office.
The first thing to look at purchasing for a home office would be a workstation. A unit that will accommodate the needed amount of equipment is ideal. There should be ample room for a computer, a scanner, printer, telephone and fax machine. If possible, purchase a copier/printer/fax machine combo. These are lightweight and portable. In addition, it will save you space and money to purchase a 3-in-1 product rather than having to buy each unit separately. Replacement paper and ink for the printer, copier and fax machine should be located in a drawer at the workstation for easy locating. There should be space for each piece of equipment without overcrowding.
A comfortable desk chair is a must for any office worker. Long hours spent typing, crunching numbers of conversing about business can seem even longer without the comfort of a quality chair.
If you have a lot of paperwork that requires organizing, a file cabinet is a must. Common types are metal cabinets, but wood is also used for a more permanent addition to the office. Shelves are also a good idea for organizing books, binders, etc. Strong plastic shelves can be purchased at most department stores, as can wooden shelves.
When paperwork is no longer needed, it´s discarded and thrown out in the trash. In recent years, there has been much concern about throwing away important paperwork, which contains personal information, including names, addresses, account numbers, social security numbers and other private information. Rather than just tossing it in the garbage, a paper shredder is the best product for making sure that nobody ever gets access to personal information. There are shredders that provide strip cuts, confetti cuts and others. Confetti cut is the best type of shredder because it would be impossible for anyone to piece together confetti, so consider this option when searching for a paper shredder. If you shred thicker items, such as membership or credit cards, make sure that the shredder you purchase can handle the task. Some can handle paper and others are specifically designed to handle paper and thicker items, as well.
Some great places to find home office furniture are at a retailer, a hotel that is undergoing renovation, the flea market, an office that is in the process of remodeling and replacing furniture, a furniture rental store, etc. You can get some fantastic bargains from businesses that are in the midst of replacing their old furniture with something new. Offer to purchase a desk or office chair and see if they are willing to offer a great deal. Otherwise, shop retail or furniture stores during a sale weekend.
