The Almost Moon By Alice Sebold

When a situation becomes unbearable, the unthinkable can happen. That is what happened to Helen Knightly.It does not take very long for the terrible act to happen. Helen's mother, Clair, had dementia. Even before dementia, her mother was always very domineering. The final straw for Helen was one day when she was out on the screened in back porch and left the door opened a crack so she could keep tabs on her mother who was sleeping. Helen noticed a terrible smell and realized her mother needed to go to the bathroom but could not get up. Helen was almost wishing her mother had died and simply lost control of her bowels. However, this was not the case. She now had to go through the process of cleaning her. Helen gathered the towels needed and wrapped her mother in a blanket and moved her to the back porch. Instead of using the towels to bathe her mother, Helen used them to commit the terrible act.The next twenty-four hours deal with the reality of what Helen must face after the
terrible act she committed.When I started to read this book, I could not put it down. Often you hear of someone being in a situation like this with an elderly parent to care for but to have something so shocking like this happen really holds your interest throughout the book. You will almost start to sympathize with Helen even though she has done something terrible. This is a gripping story that will really make readers think. It is not a pleasant subject but it will make you wonder just how much a person can bear. This is an unforgettable, fast moving story and Alice Sebold does an excellent job of making the reader see the terrible situation that Helen had to live with before and after her mother's death. I highly recommend "The Almost Moon". Some might find the topic offensive but the writing is strong.
