"Trigger Men: Shadow Team, Spider-Man, The Magnificent Bastards, and The American Combat Sniper" by Hans Halberstadt is a unique look at one of the most effective weapons on the battlefield - the military sniper. Halberstadt takes readers into the elusive world of military snipers with first hand accounts from those serving on the front lines. In their own words, you learn about what it is like to train as a military sniper, and what it is like to complete a mission and kill an enemy combatant. The book and tales it contains also sheds light on the current sniper operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The urban missions in these areas are quite different from the classic jungle and forest training snipers have been taught, and I found the new tactics, procedures and SOP very interesting. For anyone wanting to know more about the modern missions snipers in Afghanistan and Iraq are facing daily, this book is very enlightening. The missions are very different today than they were for
snipers during Vietnam and the training I had during the 1980s. It will also help people better understand those few who undertake this specialty of hunting and killing people on the battlefield in what Halberstadt describes as a calculated and methodical way. It was interesting, and a bit sad, to read that the problem of commanders not employing snipers effectively is still a problem. This is not a definitive book on sniping, field craft, or marksmanship, but is still a valuable addition to a military, and especially a sniping, library. The various first hand accounts give a broad view of sniping and there are elements on the various aspects such as weapons, ammunition, training, gear, tactics, and so on. I thought it was a good mix of actual experiences and some technical descriptions on topics such as weapons, ammunition, ballistics and so forth. Good read on sniping!
