Critical Book Review on "Leadership and Self Deception - Getting Out of the Box"

To be successful in business and in life requires specific skills. For some these are called people skills for others they are called leadership or self leadership skills. What they are called is not really important as much as to the results they deliver. In this book, Leadership and Self-Deception written by The Arbinger Institute that also authored The Anatomy of Peace explore behaviors and how perception is the driver of those behaviors. Using a story telling approach, the reader learns how one person, Tom, is coping with a new role in a new job and how the culture of this new company is so different than where he has been before. Each chapter allows the reader the opportunity for self reflection in a non-threatening way and literally walks the reader through their own self-deceptions through a simple graphic of looking first at the behaviors and then identifying through individual perception if those behaviors have you inside or outside of the box.For example, one simple e
xample was sitting next to an empty seat on a bus or a train. Your behaviors might include observing others, reading the newspaper or listening to your IPod. Now by using the filter of being inside the box, you see yourself as removed from everyone else and others become objects to your own goals or desires. When using the filter of being outside the box, you see yourself as one of many individuals, as just people. The focus changes from being all about you to being about others. One of the key concepts within this book is choice. You have the ability to choose whether you wish to be inside or outside. Of course, negative conditioning sometimes guides you to make the incorrect choice. Hence, this is why awareness is so critical to making the necessary change. If you wish to improve your business results, to learn the essence of self-leadership and to become even a better person, then this book should be on your bookshelf.
