When I ordered "Rubies in the Orchard" by Lynda Resnick with Francis Wilkinson, I really didn't know what to expect. The tag line "How to Uncover the Hidden Gems in Your Business" and "The POM Queen's Secrets To Marketing Just About Anything" sold me on the book, even though I do not like the cover at all. In fact, I really dislike the cover a lot. I would think someone who has marketed the successful products that Resnick has would have had some input in the design of the cover and could have come up with something much better. But then, maybe a lot of others like the cover more than I do.Getting past the cover, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was a quick easy read, and I found myself enjoying the stories of Resnick's success, and she has had quite a few. POM, Fiji Water, Teleflora, and The Franklin Mint. The book was more of an autobiography than a "how to" marketing book. I didn't really find the "secrets to marketing just about anything" within this book, but
I still enjoyed it.If you are looking for a marketing "how to" guide, this book is not for you and you will be sorely disappointed. If you would like to read the story of a successful business woman (along with her husband and business partner) and be inspired by her story, you will most likely enjoy "Rubies in the Orchard." There are little gems hidden within the stories, and some of the things she did for her businesses could be applied to other businesses as well. However, you might have to stretch a bit to make them applicable to what you are doing. As I stated, read this for motivation and inspiration, not for nuts and bolts marketing. When I was reading this book and the section on Fiji Water, I wondered what she would say about the environmental aspect of bottled water that we see more and more these days. Even "The Biggest Loser" now promotes using reusable water bottles. Surprisingly, Resnick does address this near the end of the book. I don't necessarily agree with
her position one hundred percent, but I respect her opinion and position and am glad she included it here. You can learn some practical marketing strategies from this book, but I feel the value is more with the inspiration and motivation you may get from reading Resnick's story. I'm giving it five stars because I truly did enjoy reading about her successes and it provided me with a few ideas to try on my own ventures.
