One Amazing Thing, written by master story teller Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, is the story of a US city struck by a powerful earthquake. There are nine people trapped in the office located in the basement, which issues passports and visas to India (it is an Indian consulate). If the stuck people try to get out of the place they are in, the remaining part of the building would also be brought down. The end seems inevitable, the infrastructure seems to be giving way, and no rescue efforts seem to be taking place. As the water levels increase, the writer Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni makes one of the victims says the time can be better passed if everyone talks something about his or her life that hasn't been ever told.Everyone Has A StoryChitra Banerjee Divakaruni weaves the story in such a manner that everybody trapped in the building has a story to tell, the turning point which led them to their present state they are in. The background of the story is just right for the kind of
environment we are surviving in. The way the story progresses in which the nine characters don't know whether they will survive or perish is also the tale of survival and hope. The book One Amazing Thing doesn't allow us to rush to judgment in any way. The characters are very well defined all of whom understand very well they need to cooperate in order to survive, or they'll perish. The CharactersThe teenager has come with the grandmother whereas the young couple has a history of problems in their marriage. The American Muslim has become a fundamentalist after the incident of 9/11. The male office worker wants to get rid of his wife in India. The white female officer holds herself responsible for the earthquake which she thinks was caused because she flirted with a married colleague. She also fears the Vietnamese veteran since it was ingrained in her mind from the beginning that such men were dangerous.Gripping Back StoriesThe veteran, on the other hand, has undergone a lot o
f emotional suffering though somewhat reluctantly he takes charge of the situation. The back stories of the characters in the book One Amazing Thing are equally gripping, and their voices as developed by the author resonate with their lives and are authentic. Many of these stories are a very strong part of the book, and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, though some go against the beliefs. Is it possible for complete strangers to talk about the intimate details of their lives? Don't they feel concerned about what happened to their loved ones outside?
