My bookshelf is straining under the weight of umpteen books on writing. But I continually try to improve my craft so when I had the opportunity to join a group that planned to work through "Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook" I jumped at the chance. Donald Maass, the author, is the president and founder of the Donald Maass Literary Agency. He teaches writing workshops and he's written novels under pseudonyms. Besides the workbook he's written "The Career Novelist" and "Writing the Breakout Novel." The blurbs all say the workbook builds on the success of it predecessor, "Writing the Breakout Novel." I was afraid I might be missing out because I didn't start with the companion book. Not so. I was told that the workbook covers the same topics and has the advantage of the exercises at the end of each chapter. I'm one of those people who find it difficult to learn just by reading. Writing, outlining and doing exercises drives home the point for me. So in my case t
he workbook was the perfect starting point. I found it to be beneficial on its own. The book is divided into three sections.Part 1: Character DevelopmentPart 2: Plot DevelopmentPart 3: General Story Techniques Each section is further divided into chapters with discussions, excerpts from published works and practical exercises. There's also an excellent section in the back on outlining your novel, creating the pitch and brainstorming. Whether your story is complete or in progress the suggestions in this book will help you add depth to your characters, increase tension and so much more. It will help you write a really great novel.
