United Tweets of America by Hudson Talbott

Twitter is one of the hottest things right now! In fact, did you tweet today? I'm a little of a Twitter addict, and try to tweet at least once a day (which is nothing compared to others out there!), but when I saw the title "United Tweets of America," I had to pick up this book to see what was inside. Okay, it's not a book about Twitter, but it is a fascinating and hilarious book on state birds.I'm a little embarrassed to admit that before reading this book, if anyone had quizzed me on my state bird here in Connecticut, I wouldn't have had a clue. Forget Connecticut, I wouldn't have had a clue for any state. That's why I found this book to be not only a learning experience, but a lot of fun. Talbott presents the book as the United Tweets Pageant. The colorful parade of state birds are competing to be Top Tweet. On each page, you learn about the state bird (from Alabama's Yellowhammer to Wyoming's Western Meadowlark) with fun facts, amazing illustrations, and humorous dialogue
from each bird.Take the Minnesota page for example. We learn that "Loons spend most of their lives in the water and they splash across its surface to become airborne. They sometimes mistake pavement for a lake and then have trouble getting off the ground again." Ouch! The illustrated loon is looking for Lake Superior, which he thinks looks just like the parking lot for the Mall of America!Talbott's illustrations are detailed, and fun. Each bird's personality pops off the page-- sure to brighten your young reader's day. The book winds up with a little bit of a bird brawl just as the Top Tweet is about to be announced. But instead, the birds break out into "America the Beautiful." This is certainly a book that readers will flock, too! HA! I couldn't resist!Author: Hudson TalbottReading level: Ages 4-8Hardcover: 64 pagesPublisher: Putnam Juvenile (May 1, 2008)ISBN-10: 0399245200
