Combining print, fax, copy, and scan functions into a fairly compact, semi affordable single unit, HP brings us the LaserJet M1522nf, a multifunctional device that is a step above their ultra affordable 1200 series, and offers a range of expandability options and versatile hardware.
Thanks to a built in 450 MHz processor, the HP LaserJet M1522nf boasts print speeds of up to 24 pages per minute for letter sized output. It also comes complete with a fairly limited 64 MBs of on board RAM which is, sadly, not expandable whatsoever, meaning super complex print jobs such as mixed imagery and text may suffer a degree of slowdown.
The device is designed as a light duty unit and offers only an 8,000 page per month maximum duty cycle, and a 250 to 2,000 page recommended duty cycle. Though this means that the HP LaserJet M1522nf is suited primarily for single PC use, a network card and Ethernet port are included for networking, and makes the device perfect for a household environment with multiple networked computers in separate rooms.
A first page out time of 9.5 seconds is fairly fast considering the HP LaserJet M1522nf's product category, and the unit's advertised print resolution is slightly confusing, listed at 600 x 600 x 2 dots per inch. This is due to HP's FastRes resolution enhancement technology, which allows for a 1200 dot per inch equivalent quality with no loss to print speed.
The unit's paper handling abilities consist of a 250 sheet standard letter or legal sized tray, as well as a 10 sheet priority feed slot for various special media types, and a 50 page automatic document feeder that can be crucial when dealing with large amounts of input for copying, scanning, or faxing.
Fax transmission speed itself runs at the standard rate of about 3 seconds per page, at the unremarkable resolution of 300 x 300 dots per inch. A fax page memory of 300 pages is helpful when multitasking print and copy jobs while faxes are being received into the unit's memory. Up to 120 numbers can be saved into the unit's speed dial as well for extra quick faxing and phone calls, though no handset is included with the device.
Other fax features include auto redial, fax delay, broadcasting, polling, fax forwarding, and even a junk fax barrier made possible by a CSI field. Copy resolution matches that of standard printing at 600 x 600 dots per inch, while scan resolution tops out much higher at true, optical 1,200 dots per inch. Scanning is made possible via the ADF or via the flatbed, flip open top that allows three dimensional objects such as books and magazines to be both scanned and copied.
A 2.5 inch text only LCD display makes navigation through menus easy and fast, while a scan speed of up to 3 pages per minute ensures that automated projects will run along smoothly and efficiently. While the HP LaserJet M1522nf rests at an awkward price range between consumer level and professional, light duty users will find it more than sufficient.
