Alexandria - A Marcus Didius Falco Novel by Lindsey Davis is the nineteenth of Davis' novels that concentrate on Marcus Didius Falco. Set in 77 A.D Rome, Davis paints a picture of events that could've taken place-ones that weren't mentioned in History books. She uses Falco as brilliantly as she had in all her eighteen books and I'd say the notion that at the center of this book's plot was the famed Library of Alexandria was enough to make this a step better.I've always had a thing for historical detective stories-maybe I had lived in that time before, who knows-and Davis just makes ancient Rome look so alive. It is that humorous banter between Falco and his wife, Helena, that makes them real people and despite the notion of them being alive in a year I haven't, they sound as if they're only right beside me! It is a plus factor that Falco and Helena have decided to include the Library of Alexandria to their list of places to visit. The Library of Alexandria is History's most f
amous library, housing scrolls from all over the world. Alexanderia was a sacred place for all book lovers and scholars alike. For a murder to be committed inside it was an outrage-and a job just right for Marcus Didius Falco.Marcus Didius Falco, of course, delivers even if he was on vacation. Davies paints a picture of the lost Library of Alexandria-an unfortunate loss, really-and delves into the book thievery that resulted in a murder. The mystery goes up another notch when the Head Librarian is discovered dead in his office-his door locked from the inside. Davis does a wonderful job of engaging her audience to discover history without knowing that they are already in the process of learning. And because Davis tells Falcon's story in the first person, the experience becomes personal-almost as if you were the "fixer" himself! Alexandria - A Marcus Didius Falco Novel by Lindsey Davis is a wonderful book, one that has definitely bridged the gap between the academia and the wo
rld of imagination-and leaves you wanting for more!
