"Key to Conflict" by Talia Gryphon is urban fantasy with a gutsy heroine reminiscent of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake. The premise is promising - Gillian Key is a complex mixture of hard-core marine and a psychologist for the paranormal community. Gillian Key, therapist to the paranormal community, has a special patient in Romania - a gorgeous seductive vampire, Count Aleksei Rachlav, who's suffering from fangxiety -better known as vampire depression. Unknown to her client, she's also there as a special op investigating reports of a power bid by Dracula. The paranormal world has existed peacefully with humanity until now, but if Dracula prevails, war will erupt and humans will become his slaves. Gillian tries to keep her assignments separate and professional. But when Aleksei, an old-world vampire, discovers her dual identity, he decides it's his duty to protect her, and Gillian must prove she can take care of herself. There's plenty of action, danger and sex i
n this story. Gryphon throws everything but the kitchen sink into a plot that sometimes goes off track. It moves from Romania to Egypt to England and even Jack the Ripper shows up as a vampire. The supernatural characters are diverse - seductive vamps, lycans, elves, ghosts and more. They're all sexy, well fleshed out and more interesting than the human characters. The heroine, Gillian, is a woman with human frailties - strong willed, argumentative and volatile. She's also independent and beautiful and lusted after by every male in the book. Reading about all the men who desire her gets old rather quickly. This is the first of a trilogy and despite the flaws there's potential here for an entertaining series.
