Maybe We Are Flamingos is for ages four to eight years and is published by Guardian Angel Publishing.Maybe is a safe word. It does not mean yes and it does not mean no. It gives a person time to think about a problem and prevents impulsive decisions. Maybe We Are Flamingos is a delightful story of two baby Flamingos, Flora and Fernando in the first year of their life. After a few weeks in their new world, Flora and Fernando begin to doubt who they are after realizing they are the only white flamingos in the flock. Everyone else is pink. One day Flora asks Fernando "Why are we the only ones that are white?" Fernando says "I don't know. Maybe we should sleep on it." As time went on and their feathers began to turn different shades of gray, Flora and Fernando began to suspect that Maybe they belonged to another flock. All kinds of fears sprang up in their minds. Flora comforted Fernando and assured him they would always have each other.Flora and Fernando's feathers began to turn
a darker gray. This was a frightening development. Suspecting they really were in the wrong flock. Flora worries, "Maybe we are baby ostrich's or baby giraffes." Fernando doesn't think they are giraffes because giraffes don't have feathers.Often young children feel insecure when placed in unfamiliar situations. Sue Thurman crafts this special story to demonstrate it is ok to be different on the outside because what is on the inside is more important. When Flora and Fernando learn the special things a Flamingo eats they decide to have some fun. Read the book to find out how much fun they have. Also you will find out how their Mum explains what happens to Flamingos during the first year of life. Besides being an entertaining story, Maybe We Are Flamingos also educates children ages four to eight about some science facts on Flamingos. This story is a great combination for all.Kevin Collier's illustrations are awesome and maintain the progression of Flora and Fernando's physical
changes as they develop. The soft gray and pink colors are contrasted with bright vivid reds, greens and yellows. In addition, Kevin's illustrations enhance the words on each page that help young readers be part of the action.
