Dexter - Just Your Average Joe Serial Killer

I love Dexter. I haven't fallen so hard for a serial killer since Hannibal Lecter. Dexter Morgan is a charming sociopath. He's the hero in a killer TV series, one of the few that I buy on DVD. The plot, the characters, the setting and the soundtrack all keep me coming back season after season. It was only natural that I would pick up the book that gave life to the show - "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. This is a reversal for me. Normally I read the book, than watch the film or TV show to see how the director and actors envisioned it.Dexter is a lab technician for the Miami Dade Police Department. His sister Deborah, a Miami Vice Squad cop, is looking to make homicide detective. A serial killer is on the loose in Miami, leaving grisly crime scenes that speak to Dexter - because the good-looking blood spatter expert is himself a serial killer. Deborah's father, Harry, who was also a police officer, adopted Dexter when he was four years old. Even then he knew the boy h
ad strange proclivities, but he tried to steer him in the right direction. Harry always insisted he kill only those who deserved it. Now Dexter can't decide if he should help Deborah lock up the man who's killing prostitutes in Miami or find him on his own so he can tell him how much he admires his skill.The fact that Dexter is a vigilante makes it easier to accept his propensity toward violence. He's just an average Joe and a charming fellow. Normally I find the book better than the film but in this case I have to admit I enjoy the TV show more. The characters on screen have more depth and the plot contains more detail. The music adds a lot to the story and even the opening credits are awesome. If you have to pick one over the other, go for the TV show. If not enjoy both.
