Refined in the Furnace of Affliction Written by John McCulloch

John McCulloch was in the United States military serving in the Philippines when he received an urgent phone call informing him that he was a new father of a boy but there was something wrong and the new baby was not expected to live. McCulloch received permission to take the first plane out to get home to his wife, Sylvia, to support and be with her in this time of family need. After what seemed like far too many hours and too many changes of planes, he arrived in Mobile, Alabama where he went to Providence Hospital where the new son, Johnny, was still a patient. Johnny had brain damage where the brain would enlarge and the pressure would have to be relieved through surgery. After time and several surgeries he was declared legally blind. The brain pressure had been stabilized but a child's life with no vision appeared to be ahead for John and Sylvia.John McCulloch was not a religious man. He had no belief in God. He had no religious faith. I find it hard to have that lack o
f belief since God has given my family such great faith that we would feel alone and lost without it. As life went on for John he eventually found some religious groups where he was led to change his thinking. He had changed his thinking so much that he became part-time pastor in a church. He started the turn where he accepted God into his life and joined into a believer. His wife had always been religious but John's change affected all the family taking them deeper into faith in God and began teaching along with his choice of being a pastor that led him to several different churches while he and Sylvia continued to nurture Johnny and his affliction.This story to me seemed more of a personal story of the life of John McCulloch with a bit here and there about his son's problems. I did enjoy the read but I did expect to read more about Johnny and his life rather than his fathers life. They did have a rough life financially having to scrape quite often for funds and did change
locales a few times during the story. I was very happy that John found God and hope that he keeps Him in his heart every moment of every day and that find keeps the entire family on a great path of life.
