How to Repair and Replace HP Laptop Keyboard

We are surprised that HP has done a nice job taking laptop market share from Dell and launching a slick marketing campaign using the slogan "the computer is personal again". Hewlett Packard laptop computers feature the functionality of a desktop computer in regard to their keyboards. However, because of size limitations, some laptops feature special keys that serve specific functions. Using these particular keys requires only the development of some new keyboard habits, like locating and pressing the "fn" button. With many HP laptops, the "fn" button is encircled.
When a key fell off the laptop keyboard, most likely you can fix the keyboard. It often comes: using a small dab of super glue to replace keys that have fallen off and then placing a small dab of glue directly on the round part that holds the key in place and lightly press the key down. When the glue dries, you'll be able to use your laptop again.
However, not all problems can be fixed this way, and a keyboard replacement for a laptop may be necessary. Besides, this is not an overly complex process on an HP laptop just with simple steps.
Step 1 Power down your HP laptop and Flip over the HP laptop and locate the RAM section. Press the HP battery release lever and pull the battery out of the laptop. To remove the battery on most laptops, you'll just push a release tab and pull the battery out of the connectors, but with some you'll have to remove screws. You'll know what to do once you get ready to disconnect the battery.The RAM section is in the bottom center of the back of the machine. Use your Phillips-head screwdriver and remove the two screws securing this cover. Remove the cover.
Step 2 Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the rest of the keyboard-related screws on the back of the laptop. There are three silver screws and five black screws to take out. The three silver screws each have a keyboard icon printed next to them. The other five screws are aligned at the top of the laptop back and beneath the battery.
Step 3 Use a flathead screwdriver to pop up the HP Keyboard shield. Wiggle it under each side of the shield and carefully pop it up. The shield is located at the top of the front of the laptop (just above the keyboard itself). Place it aside and out of the way, since this shield can be easily damaged or warped after it is removed.
Step 4 Pull up on the keyboard carefully and slowly. Do not pull all the way; otherwise, you may damage the cable underneath. There is a keyboard cable holding the keyboard in place. De-attach it from the unit by locating the connector beneath the keyboard. Flip the connector lock into the up position and disconnect the cable. Remove the keyboard.
Step 5 Take the new keyboard and attach the keyboard cable to the connector, and push the connector down. Slide the new keyboard in. Replace the keyboard shield.
Step 6 Turn the HP laptop back over. Replace the set of five black plastic screws, and then the three silver screws. Replace the RAM cover.
A quick notes, when you unscrew the screw on the bottom of the laptop, just remove the screw with a "keyboard icon", not unscrewing every screw you see!
