How To Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be

Have you read any books from the series "Chicken Soup for the Soul"?If you haven't, get it now and start reading, because you're missing out on too much of some excellent stuff... for your soul of course. If you have, then I don't really need to recommend this book to you, written by co-author of Chicken collection, too much at all."How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be" by Jack Canfield is full of extremely powerful messages on how to turn our lives around and start getting what we do want. Very successful himself, he also teaches through examples of many other successful people. What strikes me every time I read a book like that, is the obvious fact, that all the success principles are so simple and clear, yet so many of us (including myself) struggle because we're not applying them but we're doing something quite opposite.Asking and coping with rejections is a perfect example, planning but not acting out of fear is another.Of course he talks about constructiv
e visualization which main purpose is to bring pictures out from our minds into our realities.I love to hear success stories on this subject! It's so assuring to confirm, even through someone else's experiences, that the Law of Attraction works and that it's up to each of us to consciously direct it to where we want.I know it and believe it one hundred percent. However, there are days when I ask myself: "what if I'm wrong?" This is a very scary thought, and this is a moment when I need a solid proof to sustain my beliefs. I need to confirm beyond any doubts that whatever I choose to do or have is attainable and it is always my decision. And people like Jack Canfield will 'appear' in my life reminding me to never ever give up. And I'll remember my own examples when I achieved what I wanted just because I visualized it well enough.

Good Reading: 1984

At first, let's have a short introduction of 1984, one of the best novels depicting how will humanity practically destroy itself, shall we?
Author - George Orwell
First edition - 1949
Genre - Sci-Fi
General BackgroundThe Big Brother sees you. The Party is everything. Love means hatred, peace means war, freedom means enslavement. Every last bit of your life is controlled and documented, you are constantly under guard. You make even one minor mistake, one unpredictable move and you will be removed - permanently, like you were never born. There are three large countries in the world, but it doesn't really matter in which you live - they are all the same. Poor, decimated, terrorized, under permanent threat of war... life really could not have been much worse. And yet, there is still a small glance of hope remaining - because the "leaders" of the world have yet to dominate the last thing humans can still keep for themselves under no penalty, their brain and their thoughts.Plot SummaryWinston Smith, a member of the Outer Party, is a miserable man who lives in the ruins of London and works at the Ministry of Truth. His job is to alter the past news so that they would fit the pres
ent, thus make The Party look unerring.Winston hates his live; he hates being watched at all times, he hates the propaganda and above all, he secretly hates The Party. He writes his own journal, because there is a secret spot in his apartment where no camera can reach. He knows he is committing a "Thinkcrime" - something punishable by death if found out by the police force called Thought Police. One day, Winston encounters a woman named Julia and over time, he develops a romantic relationship with her. They are both approached by a member of the Inner Party (top 2% of the population) and asked whether they want to enter an underground organization whose purpose is to overthrow The Party.Eventually, their little personal rebellion ends as they are captured by the Thought Police, tortured beyond imagination and eventually broken down; because The Party does not tolerate even the smallest thought of defiance, it wants to own even the backmost piece of human the mind. Most Popular
Books Rating
10 out of 10
There's nothing much to add really. 1984 is an ingenious work with almost prophetic forecast of what would happen if totalitarian ideologies were perfected. This book should be mandatory reading for every single human, because we will then understand that one quality rises above "safety", "fighting terrorism" or "Facebook" - Freedom.Thank you for reading!

When Stars Align, By: Carole Eglash Kosoff

When Stars Align, a historical novel by Carole Eglash-Kosoff, is set in the late 19th Century in Louisiana, a time in which the Civil War and the nation's view of slavery were in turmoil. She writes about a taboo interracial relationship in the Deep South. It unveils how slaves, like Rose and Faris, were treated by their slave owners, Jedidiah and Ruby Rogers.Throughout the novel there is a contrast between good and evil, which is personified by the different slave owners. For example, Rose was raped by Jedidiah Rogers' only son Henry Rogers, still in his teens. Rose became pregnant and ordered to be sent away to have the child which was an embarrassment to the white owners. Rose wanted to stay in her slave quarters at Moss Grove, a cotton plantation, to have her baby where she was close to people she knew. However, she was put into a wagon and taken to the home of Massa Rogers's kin near Baton Rouge to bear him a nigger grandchild. The servants treated her very well, giving
Rose her own room and cared for her like family. Immediately after the baby was born, Sarah, Moss Grove's Mammy, handed over the baby to the new parents that would care for him. This broke Rose's heart. She wanted to keep her son, and despised Henry for raping her and stealing her innocence. The arrival of their first grandchild touched Jedidiah and Ruby deeply, naming him Thaddeus. Jedidiah and Ruby really didn't care if the baby was a mixed colored baby living in the house. Jedidiah felt free to bend the social mores of Louisiana and the South. One day, another slave was brought to work at Moss Grove by the name of Faris. Not only was he used for working the cotton fields, but also for breeding with Rose. The two wed, without any objections and moved to their slave hut in Moss Grove. They had a son named Matthew, who was baptized in the plantation's small chapel. There was a real connection between Faris and Rose; one that would help heal some of her wounds from the past. Al
though, she never told Faris that she was attacked by Henry Rogers. On January 9th, 1861 the Civil War began. Louisiana and other southern states followed suit. Within weeks the confederacy had been officially established with Jefferson Davis as its President. Soon after, Henry married Elizabeth Williams, which was a small Moss Grove family affair. Shortly after his wedding Henry went to join the war.Things began to change. Ruby passed away, Jedidiah became very depressed; his son was off to war, and even Thaddeus had run off to war for a brief time. Faris decided he wanted to be free of Moss Grove. He wanted to try and find a better life for himself and his family. Unfortunately, before he had the chance, Faris was killed and his body brought back for burial by the militia.Carole Eglash-Kosoff did a remarkable job capturing universal human emotions and frailties; whether it's the loving relationship a mother has with her child that she isn't permitted to know, the wisdom the
re can be happiness in a forbidden interracial relationship, the pain and blame that haunts a wife when her husband is murdered, or the inability to see others as they really are. This is a sweeping saga of the people of the American South, spanning from antebellum to Civil War to the Reconstruction. The author illustrates the high purposes for which the South fought the war and also demonstrated the utter futility of the Southern position and the senseless nature of most conflicts. This is an incredibly well written book about the death of a civilization and the struggles to survive in the new era. Carole Eglash-Kosoff successfully incorporates the primary thoughts of plantation owners, slaves, and visitors in the South to powerfully illustrate in a straightforward manner what plantation life really felt like. The dialogue is simply smashing. The characters are realistic and resonate on a soulfully deep level. She makes you feel what each character felt, especially the love
that Thaddeus and Amy have for one another; a love which could have them killed. The end of the story isn't a traditional happy ending, and you will really feel the strong bond Thaddeus and Amy had for one another. Carole Eglash-Kosoff makes you feel sympathetic to people with totally different values from your own, which is by no means an easy feat. When Stars Align should not be missed, particularly for those who enjoy historical fiction.

Decoded by Jay-Z

Book Review: Decoded by Jay-ZThe book in question is more or less how to gain success no matter what life may throw at you. Jay-Z in fact is quite similar to the entrepreneurial master Warren Buffet and they both have similar independent thinking patterns. Both of these guys ignore what others say about them and they take your own steps in life. You may be aware that while Warren Buffet's mentor was his own father, similarly Jay-Z had a mentor in his sixth grade, known as Miss Lowden. Jay Z grew up in New York City, at the place where the J and the Z lines of the subway meet. He has defined the same thing that Warren Buffet has termed as "Discipline to not get caught up in the moment".Since there are many who doubt Jay Z's stamina as an entrepreneur or a businessman, i advise you to take a look at the statistics. Jay-Z's record sales statistics are very impressive, 11 back to back number one albums which is in itself a world record for the most number one albums by a solo art
ist. In addition, he has sold over 50 million copies of his albums over the world and won 10 Grammy Awards. The numbers show that he is one of the best musicians or promoter of music that there has ever been.If you give this book a shot, then you will enjoy the read since it brings out one of the best businessman's ideas, the way he looks at things is unique. The book is quite different from the normal day to day type biographies.Decoded by Jay-Z looks into the mind of a truly fascinating character, if you are a fan of Jay-Z then this book delivers his career from beginning to end in a phenomenal manner.

The Twilight Series - Not Just for Teenagers!

The Twilight obsession reaches far beyond the intended young adult audience. Myself, the mother of two, became obsessed with the storyline as soon as I watched the first Twilight movie. When the first movie came out I was under the impression that it was just some teenage love affair movie. Because of this very wrong notion I had in my head regarding the story, I actually did not watch the first movie until over a year after it came out on the big screen. Then the girls at work starting bringing the books in with them and trying to sneak in some reading time at every chance they got. I'll admit that this did peak my interest a little, but I still didn't really think they could be that good. After deciding to watch the first movie on demand one night when there was nothing else to watch, I decided it seemed like something possibly worth reading, so I ordered the first book online. By the second chapter I was completely hooked and there was no turning back! I began talking to
everyone I knew about the books. I read them all within about two weeks, and found myself thinking about them all the time, and even wanting to re-read them when I was done. When I started talking to family members and friends about the series, at first I wondered how it would be perceived that I, a mother of two in my late twenties, was spending all of my spare time reading these books that I still thought were more or less meant for teenagers and young adults. But then something interesting started to happen. I wasn't very surprised that my younger brothers and their girlfriends, all of whom are teenagers, were into the series. But I did find it nice to have something in common with them to talk about. What I did find interesting though, was when I found out that several friends my age had already read them and were just as obsessed as I was. And as I talked more about The Twilight Series, I found even more Twi-hards than I ever expected. So many people so close to me were c
ompletely into these books by Stephenie Meyer. I admit, it was pretty shocking. These people ranged from my brother-in-law in his mid-twenties, to my own father who is in his forties and was roped into reading them by my aunt who was completely obsessed with the Twilight series. I found out that my dad and my aunt, who both ride motorcycles and go on bike runs once a year together, had even decided to make Forks, Washington the destination of their next bike run. And what was even more interesting to me, was the fact that now I had something in common with all of these people I knew and loved, but somehow never really had much to talk about with. It was as if I had joined some new club, and I loved it. Having the chance to express my thoughts on this series that I loved so much, that had somehow touched me, with so many people I knew. And it wasn't just people I knew either. I found myself getting into conversations with strangers about Twilight. Even talking to the cashier
at the bookstore when I went to purchase the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, for a good twenty minutes. To say the least, once I picked up my first of Twilight, to well after I was done reading Breaking Dawn, I was finding that this series I was so skeptical about at first, ended up bringing me closer to so many people. The way Stephenie Meyer writes is so intense that you literally get caught up in the stories. They draw you in, as if you wish you could just jump right into them and experience it all for yourself. Overall, I would say it's well worth the read, no matter what age group you're in. From the first moment Bella and Edward meet, to the very end of the series, you will be absolutely enthralled. You might be surprised at who in your own life you end up talking to about The Twilight Series. But one thing I can promise, you won't be disappointed!

Tribulation - The Lord's Glorious Appearing

After I read Revelation 4-19 I was amazed at what the Lord showed the apostle Paul of the things to come. It reminded me of the Exodus and how the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart when he would not let the Israelites go out of Egypt. John was so blessed to see the things that would take place in the future reign of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was told to write everything down so those who read the scriptures in Revelation would be blessed. And blessed we are because we know as Christians the things that will come after the rapture. I am glad I won't be here for the seven-year Tribulation because all the earth will be destroyed like nothing no one has seen or will ever see again. After the rapture took place, the seven-year Tribulation began with the seven seals of judgment, which wreaked havoc on the earth and then the seven trumpets that followed literally destroyed the earth. But that wasn't the end of God's wrath because the seven bowls came next. There were many killed by earth
quakes, plagues, famine, war, and pestilence. Yet still many people did not repent of their sins and continued to worship idols made of gold, silver, and wood. God shortened the time of these judgments because if He prolonged them, no one would be left alive.God said that he would harden the hearts of many during this time because of their disbelief and they would believe the lie of the Antichrist who came to setup his new world order and to rule in God's temple in Jerusalem. The Antichrist setup a new law that required the people to have the mark of the beast 666 put on their foreheads or hands. Anyone who resisted the number of the beast would be arrested, imprisoned, or beheaded for their disobedience. Everyone was to worship the Antichrist and to follow the False Prophet and the new world religion. Then came the fall of Babylon, the great city of splendor. This city was the epic center of the world in that everything was bought and sold through it. Seamen gained wealth th
rough their sales and merchants were great men. But of all who drank the maddening wine of her adulteries, the kings of the earth, the merchants will all stop and mourn her devastation. For the great city of Babylon will stand no more. Every one in heaven rejoiced at the fall of this great city because of the evil it produced and the seductions it proclaimed. The Lord is coming for His people, the ones that have been sealed and survived the Tribulation period. He comes from the clouds on a white horse and his robe is red with blood, his eyes like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. Out of his mouth came a double-edged sword and his name was Lord of Lord's and King of Kings. His vast army dressed in white linen and riding white horses followed behind Him. He was ready to judge with a vengeance and trample the people in the winepress. At this time, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that the Lord is Lord. Everyone does, even the non-believers, the Antichri
st and the false prophet. They're not happy about it but their knees touch the ground never the less.Praise God for His great splendor and majesty who has the right to judge the wicked of heaven and earth. Great will be the day when the Antichrist and false prophet and all non-believers will be judged and thrown in to the lake of fire. Blessed are those who chose God as their Lord and Savior. Blessed is our great and merciful God who loves us and will be with us forever and ever. Amen.

Act Like a Lady Think Like a Man - Is it Biblical Advice?

Steve Harvey's new book is Act Like a Lady Think Like a Man. Harvey has publicly stated he is Christian man, but he did market his relationship book as a Christian relationship book. Through reading most of his ideas are based on biblical principles. Harvey does not promote the biblical principle of abstinence till marriage and he does not say.Harvey does believe the biblical principle that a man should have accomplish something before he began to look for a mate. The bible shows us that it important for a man to be busy fulfilling his purpose. When Boaz noticed Ruth in the field he was busy with agricultural management. King Xerxes was ruling the land when he realized that he needed a help mate. Harvey believes a man does not have to achieve total career success but he must at least know his purpose before he can focus on a relationship. This idea is supported in the book of first Samuel when David refused to marry King Saul's daughter because he had nothing to offer. Once S
aul stated he would accept 100 Philistine foreskins, David accomplished that feat and was awarded a bride. David's career path was clear to him at this point. The prophet Samuel had already anointed him to become the next King. David was showing himself as skilled military man, he had already defeated Goliath.Harvey also points to Marlow's hierarchy to show that if basic needs aren't met then people are not interested in a relationship.Jacob is another biblical example of man aware of his purpose but not quite there. Jacob had received his father's blessing when he went to uncle Laban's. Where he saw Rachel his future wife. Notice it follows with the theme that" he finds..." He agreed to work seven years for Rachel's hand in marriage.Harvey states there are three qualities women have that are important to men support, loyalty, and sexuality. Some of Harvey's ideas about sexuality are not biblical based, but let's examine his ideas that are. Abraham and Sarah are the first bi
blical case study for loyalty. When Abraham asked him to Sarah to say she was his sister. Sarah did. Sarah was loyal and supportive to a fault. Sarah's daughter in law Rebekah was also supportive when Isaac asked her to pretend to be his sister. Moses wife showed her support and loyalty when they were traveling to Egypt and God was about to kill Moses because his son's were not circumcised. He also points out that support via encouragement is a good. This supports the biblical principle about a quarrelsome wife. The bible supports the idea when a wife's support is not there it can basically end the marriage. When David danced in the streets to praise God and his wife Michal was not supportive. Her husband left her alone. The principles in Steve Harvey's Act Like a Lady Think Like a man are biblical based, but his book is not a christian book about dating. Harvey inserts his humor and his opinion in the book. Harvey's thoughts about the importance of loyalty and support in marr

The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven by Kevin and Alex Malarkey (2010)

'The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven' is a dual memoir penned by Kevin Malarkey and his son Alex. In 2004, when Alex was only six, Kevin and Alex were in a terrible car accident. While Kevin escaped with only relatively minor, non-lingering injuries, Alex's condition was serious. Alex suffered an internal decapitation - his skull became detached from his spinal cord. In medical terms, this is not compatible with life. Alex should have died, yet thanks to the persistent prayers of the paramedics, bystanders and Alex's family, Alex lived. He was in a coma and never expected to come out. Even if he did awaken from his coma, doctors told Kevin and Alex's mother, Beth, that Alex would have severe brain damage and never again be the same boy they knew. They were told he would never be able to speak or even to swallow food on his own. Remarkably, none of this was true. Alex emerged from a coma with his personality fully intact. He relearned how to speak and to eat. Alex and his family
never lost hope and have faith that one day Alex will even walk again. If this wasn't remarkable enough, though, there is more to Alex's amazing story. As soon as he regained speech, Alex began telling his mother and father about what really happened when his body was so badly injured in the accident: Jesus took Alex's spirit to heaven. Ever wondered what heaven is really like? Alex knows. He's talked to Jesus and God the father, though he wasn't able to see God's face. Seeing angels became routine for Alex, even when his spirit and body were reunited. The struggle of Alex and his family to adapt to his painful new circumstances, Kevin came to realize, was a new battle in the age-old war between good and evil in the unseen spirit world. Was Alex telling the truth, or did he simply have a very active imagination? Kevin Malarkey gives the various reasons why he doesn't think so. The Malarkeys are evangelical Christians, but they had never been the type of charismatic Christians
who expected to have this personal type of supernatural experience. Even though Alex was only six when he had this experience, his description of heaven is completely consistent with the Bible.Alex Malarkey is a humble survivor. Though he's shown incredible strength and resilience, he takes none of the credit. He gives God all the glory. He is truly a child readers will never forget.

A Book Review of "Born to Return the Gift" by Catherine E Johnson

"Born to Return the Gift" is the debut novel of Catherine E. Johnson, which deals with many harsh and difficult times in life, and how the protagonist, Nyima, deals with them. The book overall is a stunning achievement, and perfect for any fans of young adult literature. However, it comes recommended to only those over 18 because of a sexually explicit scene and some foul language, although many words are censored with hypens. From the beginning, I felt bad for Nyima, a strong character who became a real person in my mind. I cringed at times, like when she was being insulted, along with her because I felt so sympathetic. I was impressed by how she made the best out of everything, and the tough struggles that she had to live through.Although the book is centered on a foundation of faith, I found myself forgetting that, and just felt like I was reading an ordinary book, albeit one with an excellent storyline and plot. For me, this is a good thing because I am not an overly relig
ious person, so it was helpful - I don't need a book that reminds me that God is great every few minutes. I can do my own worshiping during my own time, not when I'm trying to read a good book.Reading it, I thought that it was rather addictive and hard to put down. But I also spotted some errors, which are something that bothers me a lot. A simple run through spell check would have helped, and there were simple things like missing a comma that I felt took away from the reading and presentation of the book. At some points, I also thought that italics were overused. However, none of these have anything to do with the actual story, and the content is worth reading if one can look past the grammatical and conventional errors. My interpretation of this book is that it is one that is based on a match with fate and destiny. "Born to Return the Gift" is well written and very well thought out as well. I recommend it, with a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.

A Character Analysis of Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

What created Goodman Brown? A man so tormented by what even he considered to be a dream that it changed his life in a profound negative way forever. Goodman Brown was man plagued by his own conscious; he was someone who believed himself to have committed grave sin by meeting with the devil and participating in a witches meeting in his dreams. This spoke of an era where people were overcome with religious guilt and superstition. As a result of Brown's dream he suspected everyone in the town of being cohorts with the devil, in addition his superstition and questioning of his own self overcame his ability to trust or believe in anyone else. He died a bitter, unhappy, miserable man.In order to fully understand the character of Young Goodman Brown we must first understand the era he comes from. Although Hawthorne does not state directly whether or not the plot of this story takes place in Salem in the seventeenth century, his references to other characters clearly imply it does. H
is references to Martha Carrier, Martha Cory, and Sarah Cloyse, all women hanged as witches in 1692; as well as his reference to King William who ruled England from 1650-1702 tell of this horrid time where people killed, tortured, burned, executed and suspected that everyone from their sister to there neighbor might be in contact with the devil. As a result of this environment of suspicion and paranoia Goodman might have felt as though his dream was in reality a lack of faith on his part. He may have felt so guilty for experiencing this dream that he thought he, as well as the people in his life were guilty of coercing with the devil.Goodman Brown might have been Hawthorne's expression of his own struggles with his faith in humanity and himself. Hawthorne was a guilt ridden person and I believe that he had many instances when his faith was tested. Brown is Hawthorne to a lesser extent. Goodman Brown starts out as a good, happy, decent man; he seems very content. All of this
changes when he decides against the advice of his wife faith (the symbolism is obvious here) that he should go out on a journey into the woods to meet with the devil. I believe path in the woods to be his continued decent into metaphorical as well as literal darkness. As he continues down the woods he reaches the pinnacle of his journey when he comes upon the witches meeting. Once Brown reaches this point he loses his faith despite his last ditch effort to save his wife. He never knows if he was able to save her. This doubt is what destroyed him.Brown's motivation for meeting with the devil is never made absolutely clear and can only be speculated by the devil's references to others that have come into his fold. He speaks of the King, Goodman's father and grandfather, the deacon, minister and mayor. The devil makes it appear that everyone with any power, success or for that matter anyone that means anything to Goodman is in fact allied with Satan. Although Goodman resists th
e devils temptations at first; as more and more people are brought to his attention as being followers of the dark one, the idea becomes more acceptable. I believe Brown's motivation to meet with the devil was power; he wanted an advantage over others to achieve his goals. This may have contributed to his last ditch effort to save faith when he shouted "Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One". When he arrived at the witches meeting he discovered that everyone already had the advantage of being on the wicked side and had already sold there souls for money, power, or prestige. He was able to see that nothing would put him ahead of anyone else by following through with his original task. He had nothing to win and everything to lose by making an alliance with the devil. Unfortunately for Young Goodman Brown it was too late for his soul to be saved. He reached the point of no return and not only didn't he reap any benefit from his ordeal but lost every bit of happiness he p
reviously possessed.Goodman Brown was a man destroyed by his own obsession. He lived a miserable life as a result of the guilt he felt for embarking on a dark journey in his dreams; which resulted in his suspicion of everyone and a lack of trust for individuals in his community, himself and humanity. The only way Goodman Brown would have been able to save his faith would have been to never embark on the dark path.by John Schlismann

Want to Learn More About the Human Mind?

Amazing that the human brain and mind is so vastly evolved and yet, what do we really know about it? Not as much as we should considering that without it, we are not much in the way of a viable life-form. Perhaps it is for that reason that it is my contention that everyone should learn more about the brain and mind they own. So, I'd like to start by recommending a very good book to you:"The Mind" by Anthony Smith (Author of 'The Body'); Viking Press, New York, NY; 1984This author has written so many great books that it is no wonder that this particular book was so incredible. You see, previously he had written;
Blind White Fish in Persia
Sea Never Dry
High Street Africa
Throw Out Two Hands
The Body
The Seasons
The Dangerous Sort
Mato Grasso
Beside the Sea
Good Beach Guide
The Human Pedigree
Animals On View
Wilderness
A Persian Quarter Century
A Sideways Look
The book starts out with large chapters on Evolution, Animal and human anatomy and how the body and brain grow together. He also discusses the entire process of brain formation as we believe it to be at the scientific level. He also explains how damage brains are caused during these growth periods. He then puts all this together and shows how our brain works and how consciousness occurs and is used. But he hardly stops there as he gets into memory, abilities, and use of the senses. He even discusses how human brain abilities and anomalies take place, how super IQ is formed and what happens during malformation and damage. He discusses the reptilian section or old brain and how some of the brain therapies were archaic in nature such as shock therapy, lobotomies, drug use and many others. This is a great book and it ought to be read before one goes and start reading all the latest research papers on fMRI scans and the future of human-computer interfaces. Please consider this great
book for your personal library.

Love in the Time of Cholera

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love In The Time Of Cholera, with its interlocked love stories on the various kinds of relationships of love between men and women, set in an unnamed Caribbean seaport in the backdrop of the ravaging civil wars and the cholera epidemic (in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century) spans a period of fifty one years, is a perfect example of Marquez's willingness to experiment and adds to his stylistic repertoire. This story encapsulates love, desire, jealousy, death, chaos, passion, eroticism and the undying spirit of the place. The story revolves around Florentino Ariza, who is overwhelmed by Fermina Daza, (her teenage beauty and her gait). Exchange of love letters under the supervision of Fermina?s Aunt Escolastica results in a disaster as Fermina?s father, Lorenzo Daza discovers them and decides to take his daughter away from the port and Florentino because of his class. After years of travel when Fermina finally returns to the port, with br
oadened horizons, she inexplicably tells Florentino to forget it and agrees to matrimonial ties with the Paris-returned Dr. Juvenal Urbino, well known for his innovative methods to curb the spread of the epidemic of Cholera. A devastated Florentino turns to his six hundred and twenty-two erotic assignations with prostitutes, widows and aged women, but still considers himself a virgin untouched by anything but his undying love for Fermina. Florentino's love relationships might bear a close resemblance to the legendary Casanova, in number and kind, the only difference being that Florentino maintains throughout those 50-odd years that he is a virgin. Marquez does bring out the essence of love. After fifty-one years, Florentino's wait is finally over. Dr. Urbino dies an accidental death while chasing a parrot at the age of eighty-two culminating the 'marriage of convenience'. He never loved Fermina but always believed that the seed of true love would germinate in their marriage.
It never did. What did exist was dependency that one had on the other.Florentino, who by now has climbed up the social ladder, does not want to ruin this opportunity. His love letters this time are more precise and he manages to convince Fermina to accompany him on a steamboat voyage down the River Magdalena in the midst of yet another civil war, much to the disgust of her daughter and bewilderment of her son. At the fag end of their life, they finally manage to fall in love with each other all over again and find togetherness amidst the epidemic of cholera, as Florentino Ariza remarks, "Love becomes greater and nobler in calamity amidst the nauseating stench of corpses floating down the river, and the vast silence of a ravaged land."Love In The Time Of cholera, unlike Marquez's other novels including One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Autumn of the Patriarch maintains a folktale quality, with a feel of everyday gossip. The story moves back and forth in time. This ploy of
Marquez's to maintain the reader's interest succeeds without much effort on the behalf of the reader. The story embodies the two starkly contrasting elements, the sacredness of pure love as well as the horror of reality, depicted by the epidemic of cholera and the civil wars. The reader wishes to sympathise with Florentino's plight of a dejected lover waiting for his loved one but his evil thoughts of seeing Dr. Urbino dead, so that he can have Fermina for himself, makes the reader think otherwise. Though it is human to be pained, is it justified on his behalf to wish for the death of a man especially one who had done so much for his people (Dr. Urbino had founded the Medical Society, had organised the construction of the first aqueduct and the first sewer system and served as president of two academies and is conferred with honorary titles of other organizations during his lifetime). At the end of the story, when the couple finally gets together after half a century, the rea
der is filled with mixed emotions. After the first reading, the reader is thoroughly confused, unable to figure out why the story ends in this way. True to his unique style of writing, (which is full of contradictions) Gabriel Garcia Marquez manages to get the reader to read the book over and over again. In this novel Marquez describes, the development of love and its various aspects in the rather profane environments of convenience. All the meaningless forays of everyday life shared by two people thus bound together -- all the rather unpleasant smells, degrading tasks, and dulling routines; all the unspoken bitterness and rancor; all the sullenness and gloom of unlived possibilities - are here unmercifully catalogued.Along with the personal signs of decay that arise with the aging process and which are experienced in the lives of Florentino and Fermina, one simultaneously witnesses the aging of Latin America and the world-at-large, as evident in the following lines: - The pa
ssengers are unnerved not only by such vivid, horrific images but are sadly haunted as well by all that is forever lost: the alligators ate the last buttery and the maternal manatees were gone, the parrots, the monkeys, the villages were gone: everything was gone.A friend, who hadn't read any of his novels before, described Marquez's style as rather unusual and very interesting, but claimed that the book is too voluminous and would have been better if certain portions would have been edited. Love In The Time Of Cholera is not the average romantic novel with a couple of protagonists and their experiences and passions. It may have been set in a distant land by the Caribbean a long time ago but it is as relevant in this part of the world at present when the world is being torn apart by wars. Everlasting love in the times of war and disease is still possible, no matter however cynical one is.

The Raven Saga Part I: Raven, by Suzy Turner Is An Interesting Work on a Number of Topics

The Raven Saga Part I: Raven, by Suzy Turner, is a good effort at starting an intriguing and shadowy storyline about a thirteen year-old girl named Lilly and her family. I wanted to give Ms. Turner's work a chance, despite the fact that I normally don't read books on mystical subjects. Ms. Turner sites J.K. Rowling as one of her inspirations and not once, but twice, are the Harry Potter series referenced in this book, a series I haven't read. Nonetheless, I am glad I read Raven because I found the whole otherworldly theme to be more a vehicle to deliver a story about other significant topics.First, this is a tale about self-discovery. If one were to remove entirely the supernatural elements, what you'd be left with is the story of a young girl on the verge of growing up, who, after escaping terrible circumstances, discovers her roots, real family, and ultimately herself. And it all happens very quickly from where the story starts. This kind of topic can ride on the back of ju
st about any foundation and be successful, if done well. It intrigues us all, the idea of going from a dysfunctional family, social awkwardness and rejection, to everything positive-love, family, and acceptance. But now let's add the mystical underpinnings. In addition to everything else, our main character discovers unimaginable things about herself and family, things most people would not accept or believe. It's a ride from one extreme to the next that most adolescents could not handle.Secondly, this is a story about family issues. Our main character, Lilly, is raised by an unloving mother and estranged father. The father, we later find out, had been manipulated and almost killed by an evil I will leave unnamed here. Ultimately, the father abandons Lilly and this becomes one of the cliff hangers at the end of the story. In general, stories where there are father issues captivate many of us, as Hollywood has discovered. After the big move, Lilly discovers a new father figur
e in her grandfather, and several mother figures in other relatives. This book has an expository writing style that some readers will like and some won't. Written in the first person, one feels as if one were reading from the personal diary of our main character. This makes the writing very descriptive in nature. There are long stretches where there is no conflict or suspense, but hints of the unknown thrown at the reader here and there keep things moving. I had to remind myself that this book is intended for a young audience, adolescence to young teen perhaps. Hence, it was easier to forgive what is really lacking in many parts of the story, and that is detail. The plot moves along quickly, leaping over large periods of time where many events and interactions among characters would have happened. There is also not a lot of imagery given to certain characters in terms of physical appearance, which leaves the rest to imagination. One bone to pick some readers may have with this
story is the romantic relationship formed between the main character and a seventeen year-old boy. Perhaps this is not so farfetched anymore, but some perspective is in order. Throughout the story, Ms. Turner tries to convey the fact that Lilly is mature for her age and has come to find out things about herself much sooner than expected. All this is supposed to make her more grown up than any typical kid her age. But from a practical standpoint, seventeen may be a bit too old. I don't know what Canadian laws are, but once he's eighteen, he would be in trouble for kissing her the way he did where I reside (in California). But not to worry, his character is removed from the story after an incident where he makes a discovery he cannot accept. If you enjoy stories about vampires, werewolves, changelings and the like, you'll find elements in The Raven Saga Part I: Raven that you'll enjoy. It's a fun, light read that moves along quickly and is easy to follow. If you keep in mind t
he bigger picture, you will be able to engage with the story and follow it to the somewhat enigmatic and cliff-hanging ending.

Increasing Your Metabolism! Lose Weight Quickly and Keep it Off Forever

There are many forms of metabolism going on in your body right now, but the one we're talking about is the metabolism of fat. This is actually something that the liver does when it converts stored fat to energy.Weight loss is primarily the result of our liver converting stored fat into usable energy. This process not only requires sufficient water intake but can be greatly accelerated by consuming an abundance of clean healthy water. The liver has other functions too, but this is its main job.The metabolism we're talking about is the metabolism of fat in your body. You can create a thin and slender body quickly and easily by giving your body metabolism building foods, plenty of oxygen and a healthy mental attitude to go along with it.Your appetite will decrease immediately, usually on the very first day. This is easily accomplished by consuming the correct amount of water for your body weight. There are foods that will increase your body's ability to burn fat more quickly and
efficiently too. Some of these are fresh fruits and vegetables, plus they are full of enzymes that are great for attaining and maintaining good health.Since water is a key element, how much is right for you? The correct amount is different for everyone. Make sure you are getting the proper amount and also check with Dr. before starting any program, if you have health issues, some of these suggestions might not be right for you. Some people say aerobic exercise is they key, actually to much exercise just increases my bulk and increases my appetite. I recommend a totally different approach. Aerobic means "air", not exercise. I recommend aerobic breathing daily to increase the amount of oxygen you are feeding your body. 200 years ago our oxygen supply was 38% oxygen. Today it's only about 18% oxygen. This has made it more difficult for the average person to get enough oxygen into our systems. If you want to turn your metabolism into fat burning overdrive, you need plenty of oxyg
en. Just like a good bon fire or fireplace needs oxygen to burn, so do our bodies need oxygen to burn fat.

Top Secret Fat Loss Secret by Suzanne Gudakunst

Top Secret Fat Loss Secret is a rather unusual book about fat loss, generally because it's not just about a specific diet, or any precise exercise regime. It does get into both of those things but the factor the writer, Suzanne Gudakunst, introduces as a big element in weight loss is body plaque.'Dr Suzanne' is a Chiropractor from Atlanta, most celebrated for her use of research into the human colon and digestion working in tranquility with nutritive absorption to arrive at some rather startling conclusions. It's all in Suzanne Gudakunst's Top Secret Fat Loss Secret. You may have heard of it, you may even have read a Top Secret Fat Loss Secret review. If you are like me, you though the reviews you read weren't written very well, which is why I'm writing this. Anyway, here's what it's about. One method of becoming fat is consuming too many calories every day which our body reacts to by storing the surplus calories as fat. If this is all that's going on, the way to lose weight is
simply reduce you calorific intake and exercise a bit.But we have all had the experience of doing precisely that and not seeing the weight coming off. What's going on?In the water we drink there is lead, chlorine, and then there are all of the impurities from the environment that find their way into what we consume. Also, there are parasites that are living in our viscera because the beef and fish we eat is typically not cooked well enough and the small beasts set up shop in our bowels. The liver is the organ basically accountable for cleaning and one of the techniques it deals with the heavy levels of all these impurities and poisons is to increase our subcutaneous fat to contain them, and forestall damage to other organs and the vital methods of your body.Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst has figured this out, and she suggests the most effective way to lose weight is to 'first' clean out all of the parasites, poisons and impurities that have accumulated inside you. Purge yourself of the
parasites and the disgusting sticky muck that lines your guts, then, when your bowel is clean,'then' start following a sensible, healthful diet.Top Secret fat reduction Secret is only 49 pages, but it packs plenty of useful info inside it's pages. So what's in it?One of the first things Dr Suzanne covers is Identifying Your Metabolic Type. This is significant because we all have a singular metabolic type, like our fingerprints, and once you know your metabolic type you can then plan your diet most effectively for fat loss. The strategy Top Secret Fat Loss Secret gives you for discovering your Metabolic ratio involves 'listening' to your body while you eat, but once you have it you're ready to proceed. And then, she offers a link to a special quiz, which tells you what type of metabolic type you must go for and improve on. Nice. There is her highly vaunted three day detoxification plan which shows you a way to cleanse your colon with all natural products. One thing that shocked
me about detox was a lot of the first large losses of weight ( 20-50 lbs ) people experience following this program comes from removing the large quantities of unseen plaque from your intestines. Then there is her diet plan, which is fascinating because it shows how specific sorts of protein don't go even with the healthiest of fiber rich vegetables and fruits, and if they are taken together they can create issues in your psychological clearness and energy levels.

In Strange Grace Phoebe MacAdams Whispers an Invocation and We Find Connection in the Commonplace

Phoebe MacAdams' latest book of poetry released by Cahuenga Press, Strange Grace begins with an Introduction and the piece Prayer:Behind the eyesis a pathway of voices, the old ones murmuring and humming....come to me in the commonplace in the ordinary come to me.It is an invocation to the voice of poetry and it asks only for the ability to name what is seen. The strength of Phoebe MacAdams' writing is the stripped down simplicity. The first section of the book is titled Los Angeles and MacAdams immediately takes us into her Los Angeles with Walking the Arroyo:Natural: what we can count on to be here, what loves this difficult place.Fifteen minutes from downtown Los Angelesis a meadow and sometimes I walk there. But this work isn't just about Los Angeles and its pockets of green - it's about learning to live with both the beauty and the knowledge that the beauty is not only rare and hidden, but ephemeral. All Hallows is most effective in evoking the balance:Amid the beauty of
flowersblooming in winter, we get older in the Southern California way: warm November days, cool nights.Flowers and death hold handsin the season of souls; during Dias de los Muertosthe arms of death are full of flowers, every skeleton offers a marigold. As I read the poetry, I became the poet in her world - moving through her days - shifting consciousness in order to step out of her own way to name what is seen in the physical world and at the same moment opening to the idea that she is merely a vessel for the lines that come. Stainless Waiting is one of my favorite pieces because it captures the fear and anticipation we feel as writers - fear that we won't be able to adequately express a moment of transcendence, that is, seeing totality in brief windows of space and time and anticipation of the words we may receive and then hold out to a listening ear:not always but sometimes I do despair. sometimes a deep unworthiness, inside is a stainless waitingThe second section of the
book, Two Poems takes us out of Los Angeles and into the coastal mountains that are only a few hours drive away. The first tells of devastating fires that swept through Ojai (and other communities) in 1985. These fires are too common in Southern California and autumn rarely passes without their mark. The Wheeler Fire, Ojai 1985 is a powerful piece but in keeping with where MacAdams is leading us, the following poem Ode to Kirk Creek gives what the coastal camp sites offer us, the time and ability to reflect on the healing effect of nature, a rejuvenation of hope, the connection we feel in a world without concrete intersections. MacAdams lists all that she leaves behind in an often challenging world of teaching for LAUSD and then sifts through the frustration to find the:...student's expression as she looks at the dolphins and the water around our small boat in Catalina and says: "Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink! I get it, Miss!"She keeps...the sight of stud
ents sliding happily into the water of Clear Creek, laughing. In Ode she is on her own quiet getaway but the piece makes it obvious that this is a secret she is willing to share. Some mad artist has been here again, making hisanonymous sculptures and then disappearing up the Coast.Praises for creativity everywhere and for the ottersplaying in the kelp.In the third section of the book A Day Book: 3.13.05 - 7.11.06 MacAdams moves from noting exterior to what lies within. Nature appears in memory and in the solace of single blooms. She writes of loss - first of poets passing, most notably Robert Creeley, who taught us how to live as a poet in the world of family and friends and then the personal loss of her mother. These are the most effective pieces in the book. They marry the ability to name what is seen in the first section and what we keep in the second section with our interior dialogue - the mind that claims to want only peace but hums in a litany of whys and what ifs. MacA
dams quiets the mind in small focused stanzas - she is present, aware and very much in the "now" of this moment in March 13, 2005My husband and I did laundry, discussed our students, contemplated sex and dinner, chicken with artichokes. These small warm days move forward a poem at a time. This is the world of routine that death enters, sliding in its slippers of loss and things gone missing. August 16, 2005Into the dumpster went the heartbreak of mom's lipsticks worn flat with use, sea shells on gold cords, pictures of mermaids and relatives...Ghosts are close to me now; we speak oftenin the mysterious tones of the recently deceased. I reach for them with my ears.MacAdams allows us to read her poetic journal of moving through the usual days, the irritation of making a living as a teacher unsupported by a school district, the obligations of being a good neighbor and all the while underneath beats an orphaned heart. March 10, 2006there is a tree in midwinter late at night I rem
ember it. there is rain on the branch of my mind, and the weather is dark and bleak.I am alone with a black sky. and the memory of a branchThis piece of memory is sandwiched between the details of life lived, counted in observation and continued attention. When speaking earlier of the poets who had passed away MacAdams wrote May 6, 2005poetry insists on itself, on me, its discipline weaves me into my life, into the world of spirit; the voices say we are not alone, they whisper from the deepThis is what I take from Strange Grace, a connection to this city and its pockets of life, a recognition of its inhabitants (human and otherwise) and their voices that murmur an invocation - "come to me in the commonplace".

Innovative Book Answers Real Estate Questions With Real Answers

We've all seen the infomercials and listened to their "You can have it all" message of how much money can easily be made investing in real estate. Most of us think it's a gimmick and switch the channel; we're afraid that buying the special kit is just a scam or at least a waste of money. Least believable are the claims that we can make a fortune with no money down. I've been as skeptical as the next person about investing in real estate. Then I read Paul Xavier's "Answering the "What IFs" in Real Estate" and my understanding of how real estate investing can make you financially independent changed drastically.Paul Xavier does not offer a get rich quick scheme. In fact, he makes it clear that investing by buying property is not that simple, although by following the steps in this book, I believe it is a lot easier than one might initially suspect. And Xavier does show you how to start investing with no money down by helping other investors to find property. Bottom line, whethe
r you are a skeptic or a believer, a beginner or already an investor, "Answering the "What IFs" in Real Estate" answers every possible question you could ever have about buying and selling property.Answering questions is precisely the purpose of this book, and Xavier has arranged it based on those "What if" questions most people ask, beginning with the ones that unfortunately paralyze people from starting to invest. No less than ninety-eight "What if" questions are asked, arranged into ten sections that carry the reader from getting started without needing any money to rehabbing a property and dealing with tenants. When Paul Xavier began investing, he knew nothing about investing in property; he was employed full-time in the U.S. Navy, and he had very little money to invest. None of that stopped him. He attended some seminars, read some books, took some chances, and used his wits. Today he owns properties across the United States, is actively involved in three real estate com
panies, is a nationally recognized speaker in the real estate industry, and he personally mentors real estate investors across the country. While "Answering the "What IFs" in Real Estate" contains very practical advice about a variety of real estate issues, ranging from finding a good real estate agent and a good general contractor, to dealing with tenants who have pets, and finding a bank to lend you money, what I found most impressive and refreshing about the book is Xavier's "CAN DO" attitude, which convinces the reader that such investing can be a viable part of one's future. Xavier makes it clear that if a person believes he or she can become a real estate investor, then motivation and common sense will make the rest fall into place. One of my favorite passages from the book illustrates this point when Xavier answers the question, "What if I don't have any money?"Great! Then what have you got to lose?....Do NOT let money be the driving force of what you can or cannot do.
Allowing money to limit you will keep you from ever getting ahead. I'm here to tell you that if you're able to find good real estate deals, then attracting money has never been easier. Banks with low interest money and investors with cash are pumping tons of money into the real estate market and will continue to do so. I challenge you to get out there and find those deals. The money will follow!Xavier then steps far beyond simple motivation to give ingenuous examples of how to build your credit quickly so banks will lend you money, how to get other investors to pay you to find them deals, how to find your own deals, and how to sell a house within an astonishing five days. That's just the beginning of the great advice (far from tricks) that Xavier has up his sleeve. If you think investing in property is for you-and after reading "Answering the What IFs in Real Estate," I can't imagine why anyone would not think so-then buying this book can be your first and smallest yet great
est investment toward your future financial freedom.

Ignorance by Milan Kundera

The previous novel from Milan Kundera, Ignorance, is set in Prague and the story revolves around a widow Irena (in her forties) and a widower Josef (ten to fifteen years older) who come back to their native Bohemia. In an earlier book, Milan Kundera explains why he doesn't call Czechoslovakia by its name. He says the word Czechoslovakia is very young, and that it has no roots in time. Just like Milan Kundera himself, the principal characters of the book Ignorance - Irena and Josef - also emigrate from Czechoslovakia after the invasion of their motherland by Russia. Read on to know more about Milan Kundera's earlier work Ignorance as you brace yourself to read his next title Encounter.Settled Life Becomes UnsettledIrena went to Paris with her husband whereas Josef settled in Denmark and started his practice as a vet. Josef's wife has just died, and he was missing her a lot. Irena's husband died long back and she found her life was quite a struggle raising her two daughters. Sh
e got married early, only to stay away from her mother. She was grateful to Martin which soon became love between the two. She prided herself on her ability to be grateful, and if the gratitude was there, love could not stay behind for long.Is Gratitude a Weakness?Irena now lived with Gustaf, and both of them used to shuttle between Prague and Paris where Gustaf's company had its offices. They also shared a flat owned by Irena's mother in Prague. She was devoted to both Martin and Gustaf, as long as she lived with them, though the author Milan Kundera questions her devotion, calling it a weakness, or dependence.Piercing Regret for IrenaIrena was waiting for a flight at the Paris airport, when she caught a glimpse of Josef. She saw him once earlier also, she was very young at that time. They met in a Prague bar, Josef wanted to accompany her to home, but she refused because she was engaged to Martin at that time. Soon she felt piercing regret which never left her after that n
ight. Josef, however, didn't remember that meeting - not even when they slept together in Prague after a long gap. He was more concerned about the flight he had to take to Denmark. She Experienced A Never Before EcstasyThey met in the hotel lobby where Josef was staying, and they were in their room and in bed soon. The ecstasy she felt with him was something she never thought existed, and Josef was also equally turned on, especially because of her obscene language - he liked to be surprised by her. Josef keeps an eye on the watch even as they are in bed together. Deep within his soul, Josef wanted this erotic session to be last with her. The novel ends on an unexpectedly sentimental note.

Hebrew-English Interlinear Bibles

In this article, I would like to help you take a look at the somewhat limited options when it comes to finding a Hebrew-English interlinear Bible. I am a doctoral student in Biblical languages and am fairly familiar with what is available. First, you could try one of the free online versions; however, the websites that have these are often cumbersome to work with and contain links to Strong's Concordance. I have been studying Hebrew for a considerable number of years now and have never found Strong's to be very helpful. You also have to install fonts on your own which can sometimes cause problems.Another option is to purchase a software package containing a Hebrew-English interlinear Bible. As with most things, putting some money into it gets you something much better than you would get for free. My favorite computer-based version is the Lexham Hebrew-English interlinear Bible available through LOGOS Bible software. The text has not just the Hebrew and English, but also has t
ranslation notes in hypertext, scrollover functions, and transliteration. Here you would get a great Hebrew interlinear Bible, but the issue is cost. It comes as a part of the Original Languages Library that runs around $415. If you have the funds, this would be my highest recommendation. It is what I use in English based classes that I teach in order to demonstrate a point from a Hebrew text. If not, then read on for more cost effective options. You could also buy a paper-based copy of a Hebrew-English interlinear Bible of which there are two primary products available, one by Jay P. Green and one put out by Zondervan. They are both relatively expensive, but I would far more highly recommend the Zondervan version. I actually own the Lexham computer-based interlinear so I have little need for these; however, I have looked over these texts. The Zondervan version appears to be much more user-friendly. In fact, user-friendliness seems to be a major emphasis in many of Zondervan'
s products (i.e. Greek for the Rest of Us and How to Read the Bible for All It's Worth). Finally, if you have some facility with Hebrew, there is another option available. It is technically not an interlinear, but there is a side-by-side Hebrew-English Tanakh put out by the Jewish Publication Society. It is far more cost effective and I like the translation better than the Zondervan NIV interlinear. This is what I use if I want a paper-based text with the Hebrew and English in close proximity to one another.

A Must-Have For Your Bookshelf - Presentation Zen

Do you find most presentations mind-numbingly dull?Do you want to break free from the status quo?Do you wonder how you can leverage PowerPoint for maximum impact? If your hand is waving excitedly at one or all of these ideas, grab a copy of copy of Presentationzen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery by Garr Reynolds. Once my copy arrived, I couldn't put it down. I carried it with me wherever I went so that I could read a few pages in spare moments. It's that good and that fast of a read.Ready for your Zen moment?Reynolds' quest to end the use of PowerPoint as we know it today started when riding on the express train from Yokohama to Nagoya. He had his "ah-ha" moment while observing a Japanese businessman flip through a printout of poorly designed PowerPoint slides, appearing confused by the ambiguity of the content. It was in that moment that Reynolds decided to write this book and start a dialogue around the concept of "presentationzen" on his website.Rather th
an offering a step-by-step tutorial on preparation, design and delivery, Presentationzen challenges the reader to identify what really needs to be communicated, and then how to present it so it will resonate with the audience (with meaningful examples, to boot!)Actionable ideas by the truckloadAccording to Reynolds, live talks today must tell a story enhanced by imagery and other forms of appropriate multimedia to make an impact. Here are some additional thoughts from Presentationzen that resonated for me:Take time to discover your core message (the one thing, and only one, that you want your audience to remember, stated in one simple sentence)Relish the opportunity to differentiate yourself, your organization or your cause. Why be a clone when you can be your true unique self? Use detailed handouts to keep you from feeling compelled to cram everything into a slide.Less is more! Remove from slides any element that doesn't add to your core message.Images are more powerful tha
n words. Keep the lights on; the audience must always be able to see youBut wait, there's more . . . (as the saying goes)Presentationzen is packed with visual examples of great (and not so great) presentations, allowing you to see the difference. Key take-a-ways are summarized at the end of each chapter, and guests - from marketing guru Seth Godin and slide:ology author Nancy Duarte to Entrepreneur columnist Guy Kawasaki - also share their thoughts and experiences. Are you ready to get Zen?If you're looking for few quick tips on how to do a PowerPoint presentation, don't look here. The author's analogies to the Zen philosophy and concepts can get annoying pretty quickly (I just skimmed over them). However, if you bear with him, you will learn more than how to break free from the "death by PowerPoint" mold. Get ready to express yourself in a new way, be challenged to see the big picture from your customers' perspective, and be inspired to be bold, different, and enthused while
preparing for your next presentation.Becoming a Zen master may not be easy, but it can pay big dividends when you reset the "presentation bar" for yourself and for your organization.

The History of Rock Music - Book Review

During the fifties and later, vital, energetic, and rebellious youth produced their own music in contrast to traditional music, becoming a target for censors and conservatism. When I saw this book with an Elvis-like drawing on its cover, I had to pick it up, because it reminded me of the times when most of us in my generation were, musically speaking, in love with Elvis and his successors. The type of music called rock music sprung up from peacetime America but was adopted by the youth through the entire world. Although it started as an act of a rebellion, rock music became the governing music form for the next few decades, eventually turning into a customary music genre and leaving its throne of rebellion to other types of music. Rock music involves a vocal melody accompanied by musical instruments such as guitars, drums, and keyboard instruments. When rhythm and blues met country music, rock music was born. The book, "The History of Rock Music," gives this type of historical
information alongside with the biographies of and information about famous rock stars who determined and shaped the course of rock music from early on. In addition to the musicians, Dick Clark with his television show "American Bandstand" promoted the rock music and coerced its respectability by the general population.Among the earlier artists mentioned are Little Richard, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Woodie Guthrie, and Bob Dylan, and from the sixties on come the Beatles, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Motown, Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, The Beach Boys, The Doors, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. Later, when hard rock surfaced, its representatives became Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and Black Sabbath. From seventies on, singer-songwriters came into the music scene like Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell. The book not only gives information about music groups and presents several features from actual history, but it also provides details on the instruments and the evol
ution of rock music trends to the end of the nineties, from before Elvis's time to Curt Cobain's grunge."The History of Rock Music" is a volume from the Masters of Music Series, in hardcover and 64 pages, with ISBN-10: 0764151371 and ISBN-13: 9780764151378.The author, Andrea Bergamini, has written other books on music like Beethoven and the Classical Age, Music of the World, and Le rock. Also, a great deal of appreciation goes to the book's illustrator, Ivan Stalio, who has illustrated numerous volumes such as: The Atlas of World Religions, Adapting to the Environment, The Animal Atlas, The History of Technology, Life Cycles, Mammals, and Plants. With its large pages filled with bright photos, graphics, and illustrations, this young adult book is a delightful book to read and enjoy for people of all ages.
