The story is centered on Balmung Nabboddrson, Lief's brother. Balmung prefers farming to Viking warmongering, but can hold his own in a fight. When a wormhole opens on his property, he's in for the time of his life.The story opens in 1930. Iris Johnson, a widow with four young children, lives on what is Balmung's ancestral keep. The villagers of a nearby town are trying to run her off. A mysterious cloaked man is behind their attempts. Iris stands tall and proud in the face of the villagers' attempts, but she needs help.Enter Balmung. Unknown to him, there is a time traveling wormhole on his property and he stumbles into it going forward to Iris's time.Iris takes Balmung in, even though she find
s him odd. The children take to him and he begins to help the land heal.Balmung's steady presence begins to break through Iris's barriers. One day when the family is in the field, Iris's small daughter, Lissie, finds a time traveling pendant and they are whisked away to 908 AD, and Balmung's time. Almost immediately, the party is attacked and the children are taken. Balmung finds Singlee and with his help, Balmung goes after the children while Singlee keeps Iris and Lissie safe. The party arrive at Lief's keep where Balmung will have to wait until his father returns from Aviking.While at the keep, an old Nabboddrson enemy plots revenge against Balmung and his family. Iris and Balmung are attracted to each other, but will his family's old enemy ruin their burgeoning happiness?Dee's plot flows well. The pacing is perfect for the novel. The story shows strong emotional depth as Dee tackles a challenging heroine - a widow with four children.Dee's passion for time traveling shine
s, and she masters the transitions almost effortlessly.Both Iris and Balmung are interesting characters. Iris is strong, tough, and embodies a mother's tenderness. Her challenge is to let her heart love again after losing her husband. Balmung is patient with Iris, giving her as much space as she needs. Balmung has nobility and courage. Family is what's important to him.The supporting cast is rich and entertaining, quickly endearing themselves to the readers.The story is sensual for romance readers. Balmung and Iris share several kisses and tender caresses. "Beyond a Viking Horizon" is rich in love, hope, and family.
