Book Review: Graduate Savvy: Navigating the World of Online Higher Education by Jeff Green

Basically put, if you are planning on going for a graduate degree online, this is a great book to read beforehand. There is some mention of master's degrees but it mainly revolves around doctorates. As many know, only a handful of years ago, web-based programs were not looked upon very favorably. Fortunately, this has changed and is continuing to evolve as many colleges and universities have online offerings, whether they be just individual classes or full programs. There are leaders in the industry but many are following suit. There are a lot of good pointers and some guidance in this book. The author himself is a FBI agent who got his PhD from Capella University so much of what he writes is in relation to that particular institution (which worked for me because that's where I'm getting my PhD) but he also brings it together with other institutions. Important information such as how to spot "Diploma Mills" (non-accredited institutions that basically "sell" degrees) are presen
ted for the reader to be able to make an informed choice of where to attend. The author walks the reader not only through the online environment, but the steps to finishing a doctorate including the coursework, comprehensive exam, and finally... the dissertation and defense. Dr. Green gives pointers and discusses some of the challenges that he had faced so as better to prepare the reader if he or she should decide to go forward.Good read, even if you are just thinking about taking the plunge but aren't sure (I would recommend that you be absolutely sure before you officially sign up, it took me 6 years to decide to do it after I finished my master's degree).Publisher: Glocal PressISBN: 978-0981711614Available through: Amazon
