Ill Met In The Arena By Dave Duncan

Dave Duncan is a superb storyteller! ILL MET IN THE ARENA is his fortieth novel and it's a totally enthralling romantic adventure. The characters live and breathe, especially the charismatic hero who tells the tale quite effectively in first person perspective. In Aureity women are bred to have mental powers. They rule with psychic control. The men have superhuman strength and they can teleport to places they have previously visited. Young noblemen compete in gladiatorial contests in the hope of winning the hand of a woman of high rank. Quirt, an unknown and older competitor, returns to the arena. He competes against Humate, a young noble with powerful inherited talent. This is a contest of age and experience against youth and strength. Added to the mix, Humate is meant to wed Tendence, the woman Quirt loves but can never hope to have. When Quirt wins the match Humate is furious and determined to find out who this man is. The answer is complicated and goes back to th
e terrible wrongs done to Quirt's mother and his deceased wife by Humate's family. Now Quirt must gain the boy's trust and make him an ally in his plan of revenge against Humate's family. Quirt is a hero who grabs your heartstrings on page one and never let's go until you discover his fate. The secondary characters are just as brilliant. The developing relationship between Quirt and young Humate made for a gripping read . Dave Duncan builds a fascinating world. His matriarchal society is well detailed and the battle scenes are exciting. This is a standalone book but Aureity is such a fascinating world it would be a shame not to revisit it. If you're looking for something different in the world of fantasy, a great escape with a driving plot, then look no further.
