Bruno is a 9 year old boy living in Berlin with his elder sister and parents. His world is turned upside down when his father, who has an unusual job and is well regarded by a character known as The Fury, is assigned a new job which involves travelling far away to a desolate place known as Out-With.Bruno is not very impressed with his new home and misses his friends in Berlin. Just like any innocent 9 year old, Bruno struggles to make sense of the world around him and never more so than now.Bruno is left to entertain himself during the long lonely days and embarks on an expedition around the perimeter of the compound which neighbours his new home. It is during this expedition that he meets a young boy who is the same age and they become friends. All that separates these two young boys, as far as Bruno is concerned, is a wire fence but, in reality, they are worlds apart.By now you will have an idea of the subject matter of the book and this is why it is such an ingenious story
. It portrays a world as seen through the eyes of a normal young boy, from what seems to be a normal and happy family. Only his innocence prevents him from realising the true horrors taking place that are all too apparent to the adults around him.The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a truly remarkable book which is a fascinating read and thought provoking tale of how we view the world in which we live. I have only read one other novel by the author, The Mutiny on the Bounty, which although an entirely different subject, was approached in a similar manner. Boyne has a unique way of story telling through the narrative of a young boy and you don't ever have to have been a young boy to appreciate the authenticity. The Mutiny on the Bounty was a very good book, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is even better.John Boyne is an established author from Dublin, Ireland.
