Five Point Someone - A Preview of the Immensely Popular Book by Chetan Bhagat

Chetan Bhagat is a prolific Indian writer and his books have emerged as bestsellers ever since his debut novel 'Five Point Someone' hit the stands in 2004. Five years later, the latest news doing the rounds and garnering much of the public attention is the author himself and his debut novel. It is a well known fact that the book was a huge success when it debuted and is in news today for the immensely popular movie '3 Idiots' which was inspired from the book. The novel was marketed with the tag line 'what not to do at the IIT' and tells the reader a lot more than life at the IIT. The book has so much to offer to the readers and it was an instant hit with the masses. The central focus is on student life and the system of grading in the esteemed educational institutes in India. The novel is set in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, from 1991 to 1995. The story revolves around the three main characters Hari Kumar, Ryan Oberoi, and Alok Gupta; students of mechanical engine
ering who eventually fail to cope with the grading system of the IITs.The three protagonists meet at the hostel and fate throws them into the same room. Their start is not too pleasant as they do not fare well in the first class quiz. Their attempts to make amends are futile, as things only get worse for them. Their lack of interest in studies and pre occupation with other aspects of student life has a negative impact on their grades and before they realize it, they are the lowest echelons of the IIT society. Their GPA score is a five point something out of ten, ranking them near the end of their class. The author has very vociferously added life to the characters. Hari is the narrator and a prominent character. He is traumatized by the grading system and finds solace in the company of his friends. The story has an undertone in Hari's insecurity and a secret desire to be like Ryan. Alok is another supporting character who is serious about his studies but is constantly worried
about taking up a good job to support his family. He is the narrator of one of the chapters where the reader gets a whole new perspective of the character and his views on life. Ryan is different from the other two, as he is better looking, tall, muscular and fearless, quite a contrast to Alok and Hari. The author has dedicated a chapter to this character with which it is possible to see the emotional side of this complex personality. In a nutshell, the book deals with the lives of three friends who are elated on being selected to one of the best engineering colleges in India and how their attitude and levels of hard work (or the lack of it) culminates in low grades, hence a mediocre future. The book has garnered immense popularity and tremendous following. Five Point Someone is a book every Indian should read, as it delivers in style, the innate flavors of student life in a premium institute. It is indeed a must read for avid readers who have still not read the book.
