What Edward Deming Wanted You to Know, But Others Would Not Hear

If you are a middle manager and looking to be promoted to the top tier or if you are an MBA student, who is dead set on making a dent in the world then I would like to recommend a very wise book to have, read and save in your personal business library and I want you to know, it's in mine and I have two-copies just in case."The Deming Management Method" by Mary Walton - 1986.W. Edwards Deming is a colorful character in American Business History, some condemn him and others applaud his superior intellect, but all admit his brilliance either way. Deming was the genius who re-vitalized Japanese Industry and offered his unorthodox system to make "Made in America" mean something again. But we did not listen in the auto industry so he took his methodologies elsewhere, introducing quality into the picture of manufacturing, something that was clearly lacking at the time. The book serves as both a biography, as well as some manufacturing and business philosophy, it is a must read. In ch
apter I the author discusses the obstacles of management and a needed sense of perpetual purpose, constant improvement and a way in which these new attributes can be adopted into the company's philosophy at the unit level. Why mass inspections should be stopped, by empowering the line to believe in and work towards perfection and take pride in the process. The author discusses responsibility and how to deal with vendors and why it is not always wise to reward supplies on price alone. Walton also suggests ways to close the barriers between management and the rank and file, while ditching silly slogans and putting the integrity into all. Deming warned against compliancy and miss use of data. The last few chapters are case studies in PA, MA, NJ, using what was learned in OH, IN, IL, WI and MI. I recommend this book to all MBA students, read it with care and a highlighter, as you need to know this stuff before you come work for me.
