George RR Martin, wildly talented author of the popular, "A Song of Ice and Fire" series will seemingly never complete his next novel, "A Dance with Dragons".His previous novel, "A Feast of Crows" was published after a long delay also. But that one was more understandable. He had originally intended that book to have a seven year jump ahead in events and fill in what had happened to the characters in flashbacks. After a long while writing, he decided it did not work and scrapped the project and started over from scratch. So we ended up waiting four years for the release of, "A Feast of Crows".When he did release that book, he left us with hope. That book and the sequel were to be essentially one large book spread into two parts. With a huge cast of characters spread allover the land, Mr. Martin chose to only focus on the character in one part of the world, leaving the development of the rest of the characters until the next book. But there was hope! A lot of the chapters were
already written. "Gosh! He should have the book out by Christmas 2007 for sure", I remember thinking in 2005.Well here we are in mid 2010. The book is still in the process of being written. Six years of writing a "partially completed" book. With two more books supposed to come after that! It is extremely frustrating to be a fan.All that negativity aside, there is a reason why fans of his books gripe and vent and still wait after a four year hiatus followed by a six year hiatus. The books are simply that good. I will give him his due, he takes time because he wants to only put out a superior product.More positive news is that there is a HBO miniseries, that is forthcoming, based on this series. With the quality of the books, and the quality that HBO does with their series, I expect it will be great. Perhaps the HBO leg breakers will hold his feet to the fire in completing his novels.I hope that MR. Martin will decrease his dozens of side projects, convention attendances and
book signings and just get to the writing. This includes minimizing his involvement with the HBO series. Trust it is in good hands, George. There will only have more and more fans clamoring for his next book release after the series comes out. Get to it George, we are waiting.
