For a long time, the Bible has encountered its share of perceived difficulties. These perceived difficulties have been refuted repeatedly through various methods employed by skillful Christian Apologists. However, the bible is still being attacked even more in present times. The reasons for apparent difficulties and contradictions take on many forms and some of them are briefly addressed here.Not Everything Should be Taken LiterallyThe Bible was written in a manner for everyone to understand, regardless of what century they were born. Not everything should be taken literally. The bible uses metaphors to describe a particular event it wants to emphasize and these should not be taken as literal statements.Understanding the Culture and Customs of Biblical TimesOne of the things we must understand is that at the time the bible was written, the language, culture and way of life was totally different from what we know today. In this way it would be difficult to comprehend why thing
s were done in a certain way or certain statements made or why they ate and drank what they did. However, due to archeological finds some of these mysteries are now being unfolded.Understanding the Significance of Certain Books in the BibleMany people find it difficult to understand certain books of the bible such as Song of Solomon and the significance of why this would be placed in the Bible. The Bible is a book that touches on all subjects that affect the human race including sexuality. Because we in our day think of sexuality as taboo and have difficulty in discussing it, it is not so from God's point of view as sex is a part of marriage and marriage is sanctified by God. The way we think about sex and marriage is no longer pure as God intended and that is why most people would have difficulty with sex in the bible.Understanding the Infiniteness of GodThe way God thinks and acts is certainly above the way man does. However, because of our limitations in language to descr
ibe the things of God, there is a tendency to confuse these with the way we think, speak and act. The finiteness of man should not be confused with the infiniteness of God. There is no way to really describe the love of God as it certainly is not the same as man loves.Illogical ThinkingWhen it comes to logic, we all have the capability or should have the ability to think through statements and come at a conclusion on whether these statements make sense or not. Because of our biases and prejudices we sometimes hear in statements things that were not said or misunderstand the meaning. It is the same way with statements in the Bible. People tend to take two statements and put them together to try and make sense of an issue when it is totally wrong and even nonsensical.Spiritual PerceptionDifficulties in the bible can also be understood through the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can help us if we are truly born again and are willing to believe in God, Jesus Christ and
the Word of God. We must be spiritually mature and keep an open mind on the things that are holy and Divine. Even spiritual maturity does not guarantee that we fully understand everything in the bible. Sometimes it may take a personal experience to understand certain things, which is why God allows us to pass through difficult experiences as it may be the only way we can understand a particular concept.
