Gung Ho! Turn on the People in Any Organization

While this book is first and foremost a business read, it should also be considered one that is appropriate for life in general. The authors take what can be a seemingly complex problem and address it with simple but powerful methods that can be used by any organization. The story is based on two managers who have and use a simple but very effective method to raise morale and productivity, yielding amazing results at a manufacturing plant. The method they used is referred to as Gung Ho! and was based on the principles that were passed down from the aboriginal grandfather of one of the managers in the plant. Gung Ho! consists of 3 parts: The Spirit of the Squirrel, The Way of the Beaver, and The Gift of Goose.Written by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles, two authors who have worked together before, this book follows their previous work, Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach to Customer Service. Blanchard was
also co-author of the best selling business book of all time, The One Minute Manager (1982).The authors present Gung Ho! in a simple, straightforward manner with a combination of business theory and human emotion. Key management areas they cover range from worthwhile work - all work is important within an organization, empowering employees to achieve the goal(s) and having a say in setting some of these, and finally cheering each other for both small individual wins as well as large team victories. For me this book achieves three things. First it's entertaining, one of those books you like to read from beginning to end without a break if you can. Second it is a valuable management tool and reference manual. Third, it also is useful to apply to your personal life as well, simple and effective.
